Overview
Houston Methodist Hospital is hiring a Sterile Processing Technician (Full Time, Evenings). The role involves decontamination, assembly, inspecting, wrapping, and sterilization of surgical instruments and medical equipment for Surgical Services and ancillary departments. You will work in conjunction with OR staff to provide timely sterile products, trays, and case carts, maintaining continuous workflow between the OR and Central Service Sterile Processing while delivering excellent customer service. Responsibilities
Communicate with the interprofessional health care team regarding patient safety to improve outcomes and support safe transition of care, using a structured format. Ensure clear, professional communication to promote work efforts and problem resolution. Respond positively to requests for assistance; collaborate to foster healthy workplace relationships and contribute to team efforts; use effective problem resolution. Contribute to improvement of department scores for employee engagement (e.g., peer-to-peer accountability). Perform decontamination and assembling of basic surgical trays, instrumentation, and equipment using established count sheets. Wrap or contain items according to size and type of instrument. Provide timely sterile products, trays, and case carts by location, following guidance of experienced surgical techs in conjunction with OR staff. Sterilize instruments and surgical trays following manufacturer instructions and institutional policies and procedures. Organize workload, assist others, and maintain consistent workflow between OR and Sterile Processing while delivering excellent customer service. Utilize appropriate cleaning detergents and agents by reading directions and SDS sheets; use department equipment according to manufacturers’ instructions and department policies. Ensure trays have completed the quality process according to AAMI standards for patient use through visual inspection. Manage time effectively, keep the workstation clean, and minimize incidental overtime; use time efficiently during heavy workloads and assist team members as needed. Ensure trays, instruments, and equipment are complete according to count sheets using department resources; avoid waste. Understand, apply, and demonstrate industry Sterile Processing standards (Steam, ETO, Low Temperature Hydrogen Peroxide). Participate in department projects and Shared Governance; follow up on action items to ensure completion. Identify learning needs, consult with healthcare team experts, and pursue continuing education opportunities; update the My Development Plan regularly. Education
High School diploma or equivalent (GED, homeschool equivalency, etc.). Formal education through a Sterile Processing program preferred. Work Experience
None Licenses and Certifications - Required
Sterile Processing certification: CRCST or CSPDT Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Demonstrate skills and competencies to safely perform the assigned job, monitored through ongoing assessments and evaluations. Proficient in English (spoken and written) as it relates to safety and patient care. Ability to communicate with patients, physicians, families, and coworkers with a customer service focus. Independently demonstrate the skills to safely perform the job via ongoing assessments and performance evaluations. Follow Universal Precautions with appropriate protective attire in the Decontamination area. Exhibit teamwork and strong customer service delivery to patients, visitors, physicians, and coworkers. Ability to use basic computer programs (e.g., Microsoft Office) and electronic instrument tracking systems, if applicable. Maintain proper phone etiquette when responding to department inquiries.
