Under the direct supervision of the Park Superintendent and the general supervision of the Parks & Recreation Director, this position assists the Park Superintendent in the supervision of the maintenance and development of grounds and buildings assigned to the Parks & Recreation Department. This position acts as lead person in the absence of the Park Superintendent. This position works 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday with infrequent overtime required during summer months. **This position has been classified as a safety sensitive position and is subject to our drug testing policy to include pre-employment, random, reasonable suspicion and post-accident for the following prohibited substances: marijuana, amphetamines, opioids, phencyclidine (PCP), and cocaine, as well as any drug not approved for medical use by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration or the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.** The essential functions listed in the job description are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills. Supervises, trains and assists park crew in the maintenance, construction and repair of park grounds, buildings, and facilities. Plans landscaping tasks and instructs workers in planting, transplanting and pruning of trees and shrubs. Supervises and assists with care and maintenance of park mowers, tractors, vehicles & equipment. Supervises, inspects and participates in the planting, removal and maintenance of trees, shrubs, and turf, grading and leveling of parks, fertilization, seeding and irrigation of turf and bed area, concrete and other minor construction. Supervises construction of park facilities such as playground equipment, traffic barriers, irrigation systems and fencing. Ensures the proper care and maintenance of all park equipment and vehicles including mowers, tractors, and other landscape maintenance equipment. Assists in the development, implementation, monitoring and reporting of department goals and objectives related to Master, Strategic and Comprehensive Plans. Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly with City Administration, department directors, consultants, staff, and the public to provide quality services. Employees are responsible for all other duties as assigned and direct changes as needed, within delegated authority. Coordinates and manages various special and recurring projects. Keeps immediate supervisor fully and accurately informed on issues. Identifies areas of concern for management for review and potential action. Supervises and provides leadership and guidance to staff. Monitors work, evaluates performance, trains, counsels, coaches, and instructs employees in order to meet established goals and objectives Ensures adherence to established policies and procedures to remain in compliance with local, state, and federal rules, regulations, and policies. Recommends and implements corrective actions when necessary. Conducts performance evaluations. Participates in selection processes and recommend shires. Determines work procedures, prepares work schedules and expedites workflow. Recommends adjustments to procedures to improve efficiency and effectiveness of operations. Assists and participates in the execution of short and long-range plans. Coordinates activities with other departments and agencies as needed. Provides information and data for reports and maintains required departmental records. Responds to and resolves various complaints, issues, inquiries, and problems as authorized, and in accordance with established policies and procedures. Participates in procurement activities for supplies, services, equipment, and other items. Ensures effective and efficient use of budgeted funds, personnel, materials, facilities and time. Must have a valid driver's license. Prefer CDL. Must obtain 1 of the following 4 licenses or certificates within a six-month period, NM Pesticide License Class 3A & 3B,NM Irrigator s License Certified Arborist Certificate issued by ISA Certified ,Playground Inspector Certificate (CPSI). Prefer experience in construction, park maintenance, agriculture, horticulture or related field. Prefer knowledge in operation and repair of commercial mowers and turf equipment. Prefer knowledge in operation of cutting torches and ARC welding. Prefer knowledge in sprinkler systems, drip systems, with a working knowledge in plumbing. Job may require some heavy lifting. Position requires safety toe footwear.
