AMHERST Water Distribution Operator Skilled technical and laboring work
In the repair, maintenance, and servicing the Town's water distribution systems, and in the operation and preventive maintenance of specialized equipment.
MAJOR DUTIES: Installs, maintains, and services the Town's water system, including hydrants, water mains, and water meters; lays water pipe; Responds to water line breaks, locating, repairing and/or replacing water mains and lines (including ensuring that joints are properly sealed and bed trench is properly prepared and backfilled accordingly). Operates and conducts preventive maintenance of specialized equipment used in the performance of duties. May be assigned responsibility for collateral responsibilities, such as the Meter Replacement Program, the Hydrant Repair Program, Equipment Maintenance, and/or the Backflow program. May perform water sampling and/or snow plowing. Responds to emergency situations and takes part in On-Call after hours rotation. Performs similar or related work as necessary or directed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or equivalent PLUS one (1) to two (2) years of experience in construction or public water system maintenance; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Grade 2 Water Distribution Operators License Valid. Massachusetts Hoisting License 2A Valid. Massachusetts Commercial Driver's License, Class B with Air Brake endorsement. Ability and willingness to participate in On-Call after hours rotation. Considerable knowledge of the operating and maintenance procedures of municipal water supply systems. Skill in operating various types of water works-related equipment. Ability to assemble, disassemble, and repair hydrants and water meters; Ability to isolate and repair broken water mains. Knowledge of operation and repair of motor equipment; Mechanical skills. Ability to understand and follow mandated safety protocols. Ability to perform strenuous laboring work. Ability to work independently. Good mathematics skills. Computer skills. Customer service skills. *Note that candidates who do not have the proper Water Distribution Operator License, CDL and Hoisting licenses at hire will be designated Operators-in-Training until licenses are obtained.
