The Penn State Applied Research Laboratory is seeking a full-time Experimental Machinist Fabricator. Responsibilities include:
Perform precise machining operations using various tools and equipment with minimal supervision.
Interpret drawings, sketches, and verbal instructions to fabricate parts from diverse materials.
Set up, adjust, and operate CNC machinery, programming tool paths in multiple axes.
Design and build specialized tools, jigs, and fixtures for manufacturing and experimental purposes.
Conduct tool tryouts, troubleshoot, and make necessary adjustments.
Plan and execute complex machine setups and operations.
Calculate and ensure accuracy considering material deflections and distortions.
Perform high-precision fitting, assembly, and welding operations.
Collaborate with engineers on new designs and methods with minimal prior information.
Inspect own work for errors and defects, reporting issues as needed.
Execute various welding techniques, join dissimilar metals, and perform finishing processes.
Requirements include advanced mathematics, interpretation of complex drawings, and broad trade training, equivalent to a recognized apprenticeship or a combination of high school and technical college education, with over five years of experience. Candidates will undergo a security background check and must be U.S. citizens.
Work schedule: 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., with weekends off.
