Responsible for effectively leading a crew of hourly (union) employees to meet or exceed mill goals. Lead the team to address the day-to-day demands of the Paper Machines area. Overall responsibilities include the oversight of safe execution of all mill activities, environmental, quality & customer satisfaction, cost, production, training, leading and developing direct reports, and employee & labor relations. Goals And Responsibilities Safety – Actively lead the crew by example in supporting BBS and Pre-Job Safety Inspections. Based upon knowledge of mill safety policies, help identify and address behaviors and conditions for improvement. Log work orders, track and communicate safety improvements to the team. Model and set the expectation for the team working safely and provide regular follow up/feedback on observed behaviors – including holding direct reports accountable for working safely. Environmental – Ensure crew is properly responding to alarms and engaging in behaviors that support mill environmental compliance. Quality/Customer Satisfaction – Lead operators to consistently run equipment to the established targets, making a priority of the customers standards and expectations Efficiency/Cost – Work with the crew to identify, execute, and sustain cost reduction opportunities. Production – Achieve/exceed targeted production rates without compromising safety, cost, quality, or environmental commitments. People Development – Encourage team members to identify and develop their strengths and areas of interest and help them to have opportunities to use them. Training – Ensure that team members are systematically, consistently, and methodically trained per the Mill TTI standard and that the proper quantity of training occurs such that setting up on shift is maximized. Employee/Labor Relations – Build positive relations with the team based on the WestRock values of integrity, respect, accountability and excellence, empowering employees to always do the right thing. Knowledge/Skills/Qualifications Safety, Health and Environmental – Understand and Enforce: General safety regulations, policies and programs; Environmental permit, reporting requirements and programs; Adherence to established safety training Process operational knowledge; Familiar with Paper Machine manufacturing technology, including general maintenance requirements Understands Paper Key Performance Metrics (KPMs) and can make operating decisions that support achieving departmental KPMs – including applicable cost per ton metrics Understand operational leading indicators to help guide the crew in decision making processes Technical degree and 1-2 years of Pulp & Paper Industry experience, or 5+ years of area experience in Pulp and Paper Industry preferred People Leadership; Understand and enforce fundamental work rules and regulations; Understand and enforce union contracts or work systems Exercise motivational skills / goal setting skills to lead the crew / able to build a team; Support employee engagement Working knowledge of mill quality systems and specifications to guarantee that they are being followed; Working knowledge of relevant computer systems Process Improvement / Problem Solving Management Tools; Lean, 6 Sigma, Statistics, Kepner-Tregoe, etc. Communication: Written / Verbal / Presentation Skills Note: Candidates may undergo a drug screening after receiving a conditional job offer, but before starting employment.
