Overview

The Comparative Medicine department is seeking an Animal Health Tech I to join their team. This is an entry level position under the direct supervision of the Comparative Medicine Veterinarian. The role involves applying knowledge of laboratory animal medicine standards, performing animal health technician tasks, maintaining animal welfare in the vivarium, supporting research staff, and training researchers and staff in animal handling and techniques. Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical care responsibilities - provide triage, presumptive diagnosis, treatment and follow-up as needed for animals at CSMC. Communicate cases to appropriate individuals and document them using paper-based and electronic systems. USDA Covered Species Procedural Support - assist with surgical and non-surgical procedures in USDA covered species, including pre-surgical preparation, sedation, anesthesia inductions, administration, monitoring and recovery. Document activities timely and accurately in medical records and templates. USDA Covered Species Procedure Scheduling - assist with scheduling appointments for large animal procedures requiring Comparative Medicine procedural support. Support Environmental Enrichment Program tasks as assigned. Maintain working knowledge of IACUC protocols, policies, and SOPs (including hazardous agents). Equipment and room maintenance - perform inventory, quality control checks, safety checks, and cleaning of clinical support equipment (e.g., anesthesia machines and monitoring equipment); manage inventory and supplies within the vivarium. Conduct inventory and maintenance of assigned rooms and replenish supplies within the vivarium. Support the Rodent Biosecurity program maintenance. Train researchers and technical staff on animal handling and restraint, dosing, blood collection, and other non-surgical techniques needed for studies. Assist with regulatory compliance (Post-Approval Monitoring and Facility Inspection Readiness). Participate in weekend rotation to provide clinical support for research animals, including dosing of medication and triage/treatment of health cases. Handle and utilize controlled substances in accordance with the Controlled Substances SOP. Attend staff and team meetings as requested by the Supervisor. Create documents for any of the above-listed programs as requested by the Supervisor. Qualifications

Education A High School Diploma/GED is required. Graduation from an AVMA-CVTEA or CVMA accredited veterinary technology program is preferred. Licenses and Certifications Eligibility for certification by AALAS at the Assistant Laboratory Technician (ALAT) level upon hire. Valid and current driver's license is required. Experience and Skills One (1) year of experience working in a laboratory animal setting is required. Ability to learn, apply and maintain compliance with the rules and regulations governing the care and use of animals in research. Demonstrates a high standard of ethics and integrity with regards to animal welfare. Ability to document tasks in an orderly, timely, and accurate manner; effectively communicate with diverse audiences. Strong time management and prioritization skills. Proficiency with software applications and devices; knowledge of Microsoft Office and ability to learn additional systems supporting clinical work in the vivarium. About Us
