An Emergency Room Technical Assistant will work side‑by‑side with nurses and providers to deliver timely, compassionate care during critical moments. Under direct supervision, the assistant will assist with procedures, perform vital tasks, and help ensure smooth operations in a dynamic environment.
This role offers hands‑on experience while providing essential support to patients in urgent need.
About Our Unit Henry Ford West Bloomfield’s Emergency Department is a Level III Trauma Center, certified stroke center, and state‑certified heart attack treatment center. The team includes board‑certified physicians, nurses, and ER techs trained to deliver expert, compassionate care—whether for minor injuries or life‑threatening emergencies. Advanced technology and rapid‑response protocols treat strokes, heart attacks, trauma, and more, ensuring the highest level of care when seconds count.
What You’ll Do
Assist with patient assessments, exams, and treatments
Perform clinical tasks such as:
Drawing blood & collecting specimens
Performing EKGs
Applying splints or immobilizers
Taking vital signs (adult and pediatric)
Inserting NG tubes, urethral catheters
Starting and discontinuing IVs (as applicable)
Prepare and assist with procedures including suturing, casting, pelvic exams, lumbar punctures, and more
Recognize abnormal vitals or dysrhythmias and alert the RN/provider immediately
Provide patient and family support with professionalism and empathy
Maintain equipment and supplies; clean and prepare rooms between patients
Ensure compliance with safety, infection control, and hospital standards
Education & Experience Required
High School Diploma or GED required
BLS Certification required
Previous experience in an Emergency Department or acute care setting is a strong plus
Certifications / Licenses Required Must meet one of the following criteria:
Basic EMT (B‑EMT) certification
Graduate of a formal Medical Assistant program
Completion of a formal nursing education program
Completion of a formal medical doctor education program
OR
One (1) year of applicable Emergency Room Technical experience (must complete one of the above certifications/programs within 12 months of hire)
Additional Requirements
EMT license preferred
Successful completion of a 180‑day orientation period is required
Physical Demands / Working Conditions Work will be performed in a health care setting with possible exposure to communicable diseases. Frequent walking, bending, and lifting are required to perform job duties.
