General Summary
Overview Histology Technician has a working comprehension of the technical and procedural aspects of laboratory tests. Histology Technician is responsible for receiving and preparing tissue specimens, performs routine processing and special staining, assists or performs gross dissection, performs QC procedures and routine maintenance, and uses computer systems, all according to established policies and procedures. The Histology technician maintains awareness and complies with safety procedures and ethical standards of practice. Follows established procedures for collecting and processing biological specimens for analysis. Recognizes unexpected results and instrument malfunction and takes appropriate action. Communicates laboratory information to authorized sources. Participates in performance improvement activities. Demonstrates laboratory technical skills to other laboratory personnel.
Responsibilities
The Lab Histotechnician prepares tissue samples for microscopic exam and diagnosis by processing, embedding, microtomy, staining, and cover slipping.
Under the supervision of the manager prepares and maintains solutions for the processors and for staining, as well as performs and monitors quality control to ensure quality slides.
Processes, embeds, and cuts tissue specimens.
Performs grossing and routine and special staining
Receives tissue and checks all requisitions and specimens for accuracy
Performs, records, and evaluates the results of all quality control; implements corrective action when indicated
Keeps appropriate person(s) informed of problems, issues, and resolutions as needed
Performs maintenance and resolves technical problems
Remains current in the field through completion of all mandatory competencies and training modules, regular review of departmental policies and procedures, and participation in continuing education opportunities
Employees may be required to perform other job-related duties as required by their supervisor

Consistently arrives at work, in professional attire, on time
Completes tasks within established time frame.
Seeks appropriate tasks when primary tasks are completed and assists co-workers as needed

Adheres to clinic’s policies and procedures.
Education
Associate Degree (Required)
An earned associate degree in a laboratory science or medical laboratory technology, obtained from an accredited institution, OR At least 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution.
This education must include 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, OR 24 semester hours of science courses that includes 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination.
Meets all requirements as outlined in corporate Minimum Qualifications for Personnel Performing Tissue Gross Examinations SOP and 1988 CLIA CFR 493.1489
License/Certification
