PRIMARY FUNCTION : To layout scribe, cut, and form materials and to assemble these materials using various joining techniques such as riveting, brazing, soldering, MIG and TIG welding, or plasma processes in the fabrication of new repairs or existing plant equipment and structures. Also, to forge, shape, straighten, heat treat metal, parts, tools, or materials for the plant. TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT : Heating furnaces, forging hammers, quenching equipment, iron workers, anvils, shear, punch, brake, press, welders of various kinds, burners, solders, bending grinders, clamps, power trucks, various burning equipment, all common hand and power tools, forming tools, etc. MATERIALS HANDLED : Various ferrous and non-ferrous metals in any form, pipes, tools, fabrications, fastenings, wood, oil, solvents, weld rod, weld wire, fluxes, quenching mediums, various forgings, etc. WORKING PROCEDURE : Perform minor duties incidental to primary job, even if performed by others. Operate power trucks, man lifts, mobile equipment, and cranes. Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, charts, and sketches. Plan work details, determine material and tool requirements. Use stores catalog and/or requisition materials; transport to work area. Repair tools common to the classification. Make inspections, repairs, and installations incidental to the job. Lay out, mark, scribe, shear, saw, form, and assemble materials, including complex parts like transition pieces and intersections. Use various machines and tools to cut and form pieces to required dimensions, perform burns, tack welds, solder, roll or rivet seams, reinforce parts, install fabricated parts, and repair materials, tools, and equipment. Straighten and rework tools and equipment such as guards, shafts, and machine parts. Create field sketches and measurements as needed. Regulate flow of oxygen and gas for welding, and current for electric welding. Perform welding, brazing, soldering, or cutting work as required. Use torches to bend, straighten, anneal, and temper materials. Operate automatic burning machines. Transport and connect welding equipment to jobs. Recondition tools and equipment, including sharpening and tempering chisels, crowbars, drill bits, and reworking furnace tools. Fabricate equipment, machine parts, tools, and components as needed. Ignite and feed forge or furnace fires. Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of equipment, work areas, and lunchrooms. Perform miscellaneous painting tasks in the work area.
