Description
As a Mechanical Product Development Co-Op, you will assist in various product development projects and collaborate with adjacent teams. Responsibilities include designing, optimizing, and testing products to improve quality, reduce warranty risk, and minimize costs, ensuring competitiveness in the transportation industry. You will work cross-functionally with engineering, quality, and warranty departments.
Time Commitment and Location:
This is a 1-year position from January 2026 to December 2026. Expected hours are 10-15 per week in Spring, 40 hours/week in Summer, and 10-15 per week in Fall.
Position is on-site at our Railyard location (1281 Win Hentschel Blvd, West Lafayette, IN 47906), requiring reliable transportation.
Your Responsibilities:
Engineering, testing, and validation related to Van Trailers and Truck Bodies.
Assist in solving customer problems by developing product solutions.
Specify product requirements, assist in DFM, DFMEA, DVP&R, and manage cost and weight initiatives.
Create testing methods and interpret results.
Support department initiatives such as VA/VE and new product development.
Assist in quality improvements, lean manufacturing, and equipment validation projects.
Help resolve warranty issues efficiently.
Contribute to corrective and preventive actions.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Pursuing a Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering, MET, or equivalent.
Some experience with product development and 3D CAD software (preferably SolidWorks).
Basic knowledge of manufacturability, materials, structural design, thermodynamics, and data analysis.
Familiarity with sensors, strain gauges, thermocouples is a plus.
Proficiency in MS Office.
Strong communication skills and emotional intelligence.
Experience with SAP and PLM is a plus.
Good character, punctuality, self-motivation, and time management.
Basic hand tool skills for sub-assembly work in the test lab.
