The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is a highly skilled advanced practice registered nurse, prepared at the masters or doctoral level and nationally board-certified in a specialized area of clinical expertise or patient population. As a dynamic leader, innovator, and catalyst for change, the CNS plays a pivotal role in transforming patient care and advancing nursing practice. With a focus on three spheres of influence—patient and family, nursing practice, and organizational systems—the CNS leverages advanced clinical knowledge to drive meaningful outcomes. This role is instrumental in identifying gaps in care, designing and implementing evidence-based, cost-effective interventions, and evaluating results to enhance healthcare delivery. The CNS serves as a trusted consultant and educator, offering expert guidance to healthcare providers, patients, and families. By fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and promoting a healthy work environment, the CNS strengthens team performance and supports high-quality, safe patient care. Beyond clinical practice, the CNS is a champion of nursing science—leading research initiatives, integrating evidence-based practices, and influencing policy at the organizational, state, and national levels. Through publications, presentations, and advocacy, the CNS elevates the profession and drives continuous improvement across the healthcare landscape. Minimum Requirements
Master of Science in Nursing with Clinical Nurse Specialist concentration is required. Doctorate of Nursing Practice with CNS concentration preferred. American Heart Association BLS is required. Current certification as a Clinical Nurse Specialist from a national credentialing body approved by the NC Board of Nursing or completed 1 year from the hire date or Pediatric/Neonatal/Adult CNS within three years of hire. More than 4 years as a Registered Nurse required. The CNS concentration may be substituted for a Master of Science in Nursing when accompanied by either:
Clinical Nurse Specialist certification with the NC Board of Nursing Post-master's certificate with a CNS concentration
Or CNS concentration may be substituted for Master of Science in Nursing degree along with one of the following:
Pediatric/Neonatal specific CNS program within one year of hire Adult CNS program (for Women's CNS) within one year of hire
