Public Safety Communicator Trainee (911 Dispatcher Trainee)
City of Gilroy is recruiting a Public Safety Communicator Trainee for the Police Department. This full‑time, at‑will position trains individuals to become a Public Safety Communicator (dispatcher) for Gilroy Police Department. The communications unit provides 24‑hour emergency communication response for police, fire, medical calls and general service calls.
Position Overview Under the direct supervision of the Communications Supervisor and functional supervision of the Watch Commander, the trainee answers emergency and routine calls, dispatches personnel and equipment, and performs related duties. Work shifts include weekends, holidays, nights, and evenings.
Responsibilities
Answer emergency and routine calls for Police, Fire, and medical assistance.
Dispatch necessary personnel and equipment to incidents.
Provide telephone service, using proper radio/telephone etiquette.
Maintain complete and accurate written/typed records of all calls and radio transmissions.
Operate teletype, computer and recording equipment, and perform minor daily equipment maintenance.
Maintain up‑to‑date operating manuals, procedure manuals, and training guides.
Process requests for warrants, record checks, and interpret returned information.
Perform required research and memorandum work, and other related work as needed.
Qualifications
Graduation from high school or equivalent (e.g., GED).
Computer keyboarding at the rate of 35 net words per minute.
Valid California Driver License with a safe driving record.
Ability to pass a post‑offer psychological evaluation and a medical examination (including a drug test).
Pass a POST background investigation (polygraph, DOJ criminal record check, FBI clearance).
Preference for non‑tobacco user, bilingual (English/Spanish), and weekend/shift willingness.
Prior work experience or volunteer experience with a public safety agency helpful but not required.
Training & Certification
Successfully complete the Gilroy Police Department Public Safety Communicator training program (6–12 months). Upon completion, the trainee may be promoted to a solo dispatcher with a higher pay range.
Obtain a State of California POST Dispatching Certificate within one year of hire.
Pass the POST Entry‑Level Dispatcher test with a T‑score of 48 or higher (results dated within one year).

Compensation & Benefits Base salary: $7,029.50 – $11,483.33 per month, plus holiday pay (6.6 % of base), bilingual pay (5 %) and uniform allowance ($41.67/month).
