Failure Analysis (FA) Lab Manager
to lead the operations, development, and growth of our state-of-the-art Failure Analysis Laboratory. This role is critical in driving analytical excellence, supporting root-cause investigations, and enabling continuous improvement in product quality and reliability. The FA Lab Manager will oversee lab operations, manage engineers and technicians, ensure compliance with industry standards, and build strategic roadmaps for expanding FA capabilities. This is a hands-on leadership role with responsibility for both day-to-day lab activities and long-term strategy development. Location: Mount Pleasant, WI. Responsibilities
Manage the daily operations of the Failure Analysis Laboratory, including scheduling, resource planning, and workflow prioritization. Lead, train, and mentor a team of engineers and technicians, ensuring high performance and professional development. Oversee all FA activities including PCB/PCBA investigations, solder joint reliability, component-level analysis, contamination testing, and environmental/materials studies. Ensure proper use and maintenance of analytical equipment (X-ray, SEM/EDX, CSAM, FTIR, cross-sectioning, dye-and-pull, etc.). Establish, maintain, and enforce lab documentation such as SOPs, work instructions, calibration logs, and best practices. Review and approve FA reports to ensure accuracy, completeness, and alignment with customer and internal requirements. Collaborate with design, reliability, manufacturing, and quality teams to identify root causes of failures and implement corrective actions. Develop and implement continuous improvement initiatives for efficiency, throughput, and accuracy in lab operations. Evaluate and recommend new analytical tools, methodologies, and automation technologies to expand FA capabilities. Ensure compliance with IPC, JEDEC, ISO/IEC 17025, and other applicable standards. Promote a safe, organized, and efficient working environment following 5S and safety practices. Support hiring, onboarding, and performance management within the FA lab. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or related technical field; Master’s degree preferred. 8–10+ years of experience in failure analysis, reliability engineering, or microelectronics testing, with at least 3–5 years in a leadership or lab management role. Strong expertise in PCB/PCBA failure mechanisms, solder joint reliability, component analysis, and material/contamination analysis. Hands-on experience with FA tools and methods such as X-ray, SEM/EDX, CSAM, FTIR, cross-sectioning, and dye-and-pull. Familiarity with IPC and JEDEC standards; ISO/IEC 17025 laboratory management strongly preferred. Proven ability to manage lab operations, including scheduling, equipment calibration, inventory control, and workflow optimization. Strong organizational, leadership, and team development skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare and review detailed technical reports. Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook). High integrity, professionalism, and focus on continuous improvement. Must be able to sit or stand at workstations for extended periods; ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Benefits
