Lead Transportation Engineer
with experience in
Highway design
to join our Civil Engineering group in the Mid Atlantic District. The candidate may be located in Washington, DC, Philadelphia, PA, Herndon, VA, Baltimore, MD, Virginia Beach, VA or Richmond, VA. The ideal candidate should have experience in the design of highways, roadway geometric design, roadway plan production, and drainage design for traditional delivery and/or alternative delivery projects. The candidate will lead technical design programs, facilitate client engagement, reinforce internal design standards, and identify future contract opportunities. The role involves providing subject matter leadership for multi-site/phased heavy civil programs across site layout, roadway, drainage, stormwater management, utility and erosion & sediment control across public and private sectors. The position supports flagship infrastructure programs across transportation, transit, site, and environmental sectors and partners with senior team members to grow regional technical expertise.
Your Impact
Develop construction plans, specifications, reports and cost estimates; prepare construction safety and phasing plans and update infrastructure layout plans coordinating with owners, other disciplines, sub-consultants, and clients.
Lead client-facing engagement sessions centered on technical memoranda.
Support/lead large-scale heavy civil projects ensuring alignment of roles & responsibilities among collaborators.
Assist with engineering reviews of permit applications, design plans and specifications, standby plans and contracts, and related documents to ensure compliance with regulations and standards.
Ensure technical reports and presentations explain research, findings, and recommendations to address engineering, design, and construction issues or opportunities.
Collect, compile, and analyze data from site surveys, blueprints, GIS, subsurface utilities, hydrologic/geotechnical data, and other sources for project development, design, and construction.
Apply advanced civil engineering techniques to identify improvements for project phases from concept to operation.
Perform professional civil engineering work and conduct investigations and inspections of site conditions to ensure conformance with rules and permits.
Manage design and construction of infrastructure projects, including rehabilitation, grading, drainage, pavement design, materials, phasing, and safety plans.
Oversee development and implementation of technologies, monitoring devices, modeling techniques, and design requirements to ensure safety and functionality.
Coordinate work within the team, lead projects, and engage with clients on-site as required, including mentoring staff.
Stay current with the latest structural engineering techniques and practices.
Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in engineering or closely related discipline (postgraduate education may be preferred).
7 to 10 years of relevant post-education experience in engineering and civil design.
P.E. license required (multi-state preferred).
Proficient with civil engineering principles, design/build processes, and permitting.
Extensive knowledge of infrastructure and highway design.
Proficiency with technical writing and design software (e.g., MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, InRoads, Geopak, GeoSlope, ANSYS, STADD, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS).
Experience with infrastructure planning, design, and construction management across rehabilitation and new design projects.
Knowledge of civil construction laws, codes, regulations, and compliance practices.
Strong analytical, written, and communication skills for both engineering and non-engineering audiences.
Ability to work independently with minimal oversight and mentor junior staff with QA/QC adherence.
Strong problem-solving skills and ability to coordinate with subcontractors to complete tasks safely and efficiently.
Commitment to workplace safety and ability to comply with company policies.
Ability to work flexible schedules and travel as required by projects.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s Degree in Engineering (Graduate level) or equivalent.

Compensation
Expected Salary (all locations): $95,000 - $169,300. WSP USA reserves the right to modify the offered compensation based on education, experience, and location.
