Custodian And Maintenance Facility Assistant Africatown Community Land Trust (ACLT) seeks a highly organized individual with cleaning and maintenance experience who contributes to a safe and healthy work and living environment. The successful candidate will be skilled in cleaning, safety, and maintenance practices for disinfecting, sanitizing, and operating heavy-duty janitorial equipment in high-traffic areas accessed by community members, guests, residents, and staff. This is a full-time position reporting to the Facilities and Maintenance Manager. The position primarily serves the Benu Community Home and will travel to other ACLT facilities as needed.

About The Position The Facilities Maintenance Assistant and Custodian provide a safe and clean environment for facilities, employees, and guests. Daily responsibilities are shared between two locations within ACLT, with William Gross Center as the primary custodial location. The role collaborates with the Facilities and Maintenance Manager, other custodians, and program managers to ensure daily cleaning and sanitization and proper maintenance of building areas.

Responsibilities

Contribute to the efficient delivery of cleaning services and maintenance work orders by completing routine cleaning tasks on schedule, troubleshooting issues, and performing extra duties as assigned.

General Janitorial Duties: empty waste and recycling, clean and wipe reception areas, elevators, foyers, stairwells, kitchens and food prep areas, offices, conference rooms, and other spaces; clean exterior of microwaves; sanitize hard surfaces and appliances; vacuum high-traffic areas daily and other areas as needed; monitor facility perimeter and waste removal.

Hard Floor Care: manage cleaning supply inventory, assist with meeting room setup, dust and clean surfaces, dust-mop and wet-mop floors, restock paper products, and perform floor care (strip, wax, top clean).

Restroom Sanitation: clean, sanitize, and disinfect sinks, toilets, stall doors, counters, and mirrors; replace paper products and soap, dust-mop and wet-mop floors; perform monthly top scrubbing of hard floors; daily cleaning of all hard floor surfaces; interior windows maintenance as needed.

General Maintenance Duties: collaborate with the Facilities Manager on supply ordering, perform weekly inspections, respond to maintenance requests (plumbing, electrical, appliances, furniture), inspect facilities for safety hazards, perform basic maintenance tasks (painting, carpentry, drywall, bulb replacements), assist with HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems, and other equipment, follow safety protocols and building codes.

Maintain accurate documentation of maintenance activities and assist with inventory management and preventive maintenance programs. Coordinate with outside vendors and contractors as needed.

Uphold safety and cleanliness standards and maintain organization in maintenance storage areas and workshops.

Qualifications

Minimum: 3 years of janitorial or cleaning experience in an office environment or public facility

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent technical experience

Positive attitude and customer service experience

Basic computer skills with ability to read and respond to emails with proper grammar

Excellent follow-through and organizational skills for cleaning requests

Ability to work well in a team or independently

Knowledge of hazardous cleaning chemicals and proper usage

Knowledge of cleaning and disposal of biohazardous waste and bloodborne pathogens

Knowledge of OSHA cleaning guidelines including COVID cleaning standards

Certifications are welcome but not required

Desired

Five years of maintenance assistant and/or janitorial experience

Lead worker in building maintenance, landscaping, or janitorial

HVAC certification

Work Environment Physical ability to perform the job includes long periods of standing, walking, stooping, and lifting up to 50 lbs. Tasks include cleaning, maintenance, and equipment operation; periodic painting, carpentry, drywall work, bulb replacement, and equipment maintenance. Maintain cleaning equipment and supplies, secure fire doors, and assist with meeting room setups as needed.
