What is a Parent Partner Peer Support Specialist/Trainee?

A Parent Partner Peer Support Specialist/Trainee is someone who has or is currently assisting their children or adoptive children with mental or behavioral health and has navigated the system for a minimum of one year in order to provide support for other parent/partners in a similar situation. Candidates must be able to share personal experiences raising a child through mental or behavioral health recovery with others. How It Works

Applicants answer questions about personal experience, work experience, and qualifications. Most competitive applicants (based on specialized skills) will be referred for interviews. Responsibilities

Provide meaningful self-disclosure of personal lived experience of behavioral health-related or substance abuse-related recovery and resiliency to the people served in the system of care (required by State Certification). Inform, train, support, and empower consumers, families and caregivers who directly or indirectly receive behavioral health services. Communicate, represent and promote the consumer, families and caregivers' perspective within the behavioral health system. Facilitate self-help groups for clients, youth, family members, and caregivers. Attend and participate in special events, conferences, workshops, and trainings within the behavioral health system and in the community. Develop activities, programs and resources which support consumers, families and caregivers in achieving their goals. Support recognition and understanding of social and cultural factors in the provision of behavioral health services. Develop working relationships with agencies and organizations to advocate for consumer, family and caregiver empowerment. Help prepare and support clients, families and caregivers at consumer progress consultation meetings and at various hearings. Assist consumers and supporters in articulating their needs. Focus on consumer, family and caregiver satisfaction with services and overall behavioral health services. Assist and promote involvement in support networks and activities. Document all activities as required, following Medi-Cal billing practices. Minimum Qualifications

roles: Education – high school diploma or equivalent; Experience – recovery experience as a Parent Partner or consumer/family member in behavioral health; Licenses/Certifications – valid California Driver's License may be required; Medi-Cal Peer Support Certification must be obtained within two years of start date for Trainee; California Medi-Cal Peer Support Certification required for the Certified role and renewal every two years. Knowledge of the needs of ethnically diverse consumers, families and caregivers; understanding of public/private services for families and individuals with behavioral health needs; ability to communicate effectively within the behavioral health system. Ability to learn the behavioral health system, advocate for the consumer perspective, understand cultural factors, and maintain relationships with community agencies; ability to document information for case reports. Schedule & Compensation

Schedule varies by location and department needs. Salary ranges:

Peer Support Specialist Trainee

$18.69–$25.62;

Certified Peer Support Specialist

$22.41–$30.50. Additional Information

Qualifications may include background investigations; some positions require a driver’s license. Proof of education and licensing may be requested; Veterans’ Preference policy applies.
