Surgical Technologists are allied health professionals who are an integral part of the surgical care team. They work under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN) and a surgeon to facilitate surgical procedures, ensuring a safe operating room environment, proper functioning of equipment, and patient safety.
The surgical technologist handles instruments, supplies, and equipment during procedures. They understand the surgical process and anticipate the surgeon's needs. They maintain the sterile field, operate independently in the scrub role, and function as a circulator under RN supervision. This role may require on-call duties and rotating shifts.
Maintain sterile field
Prepare operating rooms and assist with patient positioning
Inspect sterile items for contamination before opening
Maintain sterility of instruments and supplies
Perform accurate instrument, sponge, and needle counts according to policies
