Part-Time Instructor, Physical Education, Health and Recreation (PEHR) Disciplines
This is a position we anticipate filling for future semesters. Specific part-time teaching needs for future semesters may not be known until the end of class registration.
Purpose, Scope & Dimension of Job Purpose : Faculty facilitate student learning and initiate and participate in efforts to consistently improve the level of student success. As learning facilitators, faculty consistently assess learning outcomes and their own teaching effectiveness (pedagogy). Faculty adhere to the ethical standards of their profession as outlined by the NEA and the State of Michigan. Faculty maintain licensure and certifications where applicable and have the following key responsibilities:

Specific Teaching Assignment Faculty member will be responsible for teaching classes in Physical Education, Health and Recreation disciplines, as assigned, adhering to agreed course objectives, content and delivery.
Essential Duties / Major Accountabilities
Facilitate learning and participate in continual improvement of student success.
Maintain an ongoing professional development program covering subject matter and pedagogy.
Participate in collegial initiatives at the discipline, division, Academic Affairs and College levels.
Actively support the College’s operational success.
Communicate respectfully and effectively with all stakeholders.
Minimize/eliminate safety risks and create a safe learning environment.
Detailed responsibilities for each of these points are provided in the following sub‑lists:
Student‑centered learning environment creation.
Coordination with Student Services and lab support.
Mentoring and counseling student academic and career needs.
Maintaining office hours and communication via telephone, e‑mail, fax and mail.
Planning and developing face‑to‑face and technology‑based instruction.
Applying instructional design practices and assessment mechanisms.
Using diverse teaching approaches for varied student populations.
Implementing technology and curriculum infusion of diversity and environmental awareness.
Maintaining accurate records and adhering to FERPA confidentiality.
Designing and conducting lab experiments.
Coordinating laboratory and tutor support.
Maintaining lab equipment and specifications.
Other professional duties (for Nursing/Allied Health) as assigned, including clinical instruction and performance evaluations.
Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, Exercise Physiology, Health‑related field, Education, Business, Science, or Arts from an accredited institution.
Certification and ongoing maintenance of specialty area certifications (e.g., American Heart Association CPR, Scuba Diving Instructor).
At least two years of experience as an instructor in physical education, fitness/wellness or recreational instructional fields.
Evidence of continuing professional development.
Understanding of community college teaching mission and philosophy.
Innovative, flexible, and positive teaching style that meets diverse student needs.
Strong written and oral communication skills, including ability to produce reports and present information.
Mathematical skills for percentage, ratio, proportion, probability, and statistical inference.
Reasoning abilities for solving practical problems.
Technology skills for integrating computer applications into teaching.
Additional skills such as current research application, curriculum planning, collegial relationship building, and proficiency in specialized areas.
Foreign degree must be certified by a professional evaluation service at the candidate’s expense.
Additional Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in related field.
Teaching experience at the community college level.
Familiarity with computer‑based instruction, distance learning, and competency‑based instruction.
One year of experience in fitness center instruction or management.
Possession of various certifications in physical education, fitness, or exercise physiology, with maintained currency.
Physical Requirements / Working Conditions
Move about 2/3 of the time and be stationary for 1/3.
Converse regularly, read, analyze and interpret needs via phone, face‑to‑face or written communication.
Utilize computer programs such as the internet, Word, and the student database independently and efficiently.
Present information in instructional settings and respond to questions from groups.
Tolerate frequent exposure to chemicals and handle them safely with appropriate protective equipment.
Work Schedule While part‑time faculty are not required to hold regular office hours during the semesters they teach, they are required to make provisions for student consultations as may be necessary and reasonable.
Additional Information Students must be available to teach onsite; opportunities do not exist to teach online courses only.
