Equine Reproduction Concepts, LLC (ERC) offers a program whereby veterinary students can gain exposure to various techniques and procedures related to stallion and mare reproductive management. Positions are available annually from March 15th through July, with scheduling in 2- or 4-week increments. The program is structured to allow only a single participant at a time to maximize theoretical and practical exposure. The goal is for participants to acquire experience and a working knowledge of general and advanced equine reproductive management. Involvement: Participants will be exposed to mare reproductive management using palpation/ultrasonography, hormonal treatments, uterine infusions and lavages, cultures, cytologies, and biopsies. They will also learn artificial insemination with fresh, cooled, and frozen semen, embryo recovery, and transfer. Stallion procedures include semen collection, evaluation, processing for immediate insemination, cooling, or freezing, as well as reproductive evaluations and stallion handling. Participants will gain practical experience in palpation/ultrasonography, artificial insemination, semen collection, evaluation, processing, and stallion handling. Periodic sit-down sessions will be held where ERC practitioners discuss specific techniques and cases with externs. Duties/Responsibilities: Externs are expected to assist with routine management practices at ERC. Responsibilities include administering treatments, teasing mares, handling stallions, and assisting practitioners with procedures such as preparing mares for uterine lavages, embryo recoveries, and surgeries. Additional duties involve record-keeping during ultrasound exams, handling mares, preparing for semen collections, and processing semen for shipment. A work schedule will be developed for each participant, based on clinic needs and participant availability. Typical schedules involve 10-12 hours per day, five and a half days per week.
