Overview

The University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, is seeking a NICU Advanced Practice Provider at 50% - 100% FTE. SIGN-ON BONUS OF $20,000 for qualified candidates. (*Must be hired at 75% FTE or greater; Internal candidates are not eligible for sign-on bonus.) This position provides overall medical care and medical management for NICU patients, exercising autonomy in medical decision-making and services provided. The role will function independently and/or as a member of an interdisciplinary team to plan, deliver, and evaluate health care for the inpatient NICU population. The focus is on caring for hospitalized patients to manage care and length of stay, improve resource utilization and decrease costs while providing personalized care on a 24/7 basis. Position Responsibilities

Assesses the patient’s health status by history taking, physical examination, laboratory studies, and other appropriate means, including procedures such as PICC line insertion and lumbar puncture. Plans and communicates treatment programs related to the patient’s health needs. Recognizes, discriminates, and manages acute illness, chronic conditions, and disabilities. Completes medicine documentation and billing procedures according to institutional and departmental guidelines. Integrates health information into diagnoses and treatment plans and may assist patients and families in implementing the plan in the community. Provides an ongoing health education program for patients and their families, utilizing available media. Initiates therapeutic measures using independent judgment according to recognized clinical guidelines. Completes MAC, human resources, outreach, and other administrative paperwork. Performs other projects as assigned. Assumes responsibility for supervisory and administrative activities and special projects as delegated by the Nurse Practitioner Supervisor/Medical Director. Demonstrates ability to synthesize scientific, behavioral, and humanistic principles for application to clinical practice at the advanced nurse practitioner level. Understands nursing theory, pathophysiology, and pharmacokinetics; conducts comprehensive history and physical examinations, develops differential diagnoses, plans care, implements treatment including referrals and prescriptions, and evaluates patient responses to health and treatment. Documents and reports interventions and patient/family responses; identifies care and education needs and coordinates care with referrals, community support agencies, schools, and local primary care providers. Demonstrates knowledge of research activities, quality improvement principles, and participates in development and implementation related to patient outcomes. Understands the Nurse Practice Act, including ARNP components. Performs technical skills defined by the collaborative practice agreement according to the Iowa Board of Nursing and UIHC standards. UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital is home to Iowa’s only Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The Division of Neonatology provides innovative, comprehensive, high-quality care from a team of physicians, advanced registered nurse practitioners, RNs and others. Approximately 900 babies receive neonatal services each year, in a NICU that is consistently ranked among the top NICUs in the country and includes 88 beds with the opening of UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital. Education Required

Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP): A master’s degree in nursing is preferred; if the master’s degree is in a related field, a Baccalaureate degree in Nursing is required. Current RN license from the State of Iowa is required. Current certification as a pediatric nurse practitioner (CPNP – AC or CPNP - PC) and licensure as ARNP in Iowa is required. Understands the Nurse Practice Act, including ARNP components. Ability to perform technical skills and function as an independent practitioner per the collaborative practice agreement and UIHC standards. Physician Assistant (PA): Must comply with Iowa Board of Physician Assistant Examiners requirements, including graduation from an accredited PA program and/or certification by the NCCPA. Experience Requirements

One to three years’ experience in pediatric care or relevant experience in caring for sick pediatric patients is required. National certification as NNP, PNP, PNP-AC, or PA (national exam) is required. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a welcoming and respectful workplace. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required. Desirable Qualifications

Demonstrated Level III/VI NICU experience. Clinical excellence demonstrated through published articles and/or presentations. Experience providing overall medical care and inpatient medical management. Experience exercising autonomy in medical decision-making and service delivery. Experience managing length of stay, improving resource utilization, and reducing costs while delivering personalized care. Experience working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
