Job Description - Equipment Mechanic I, II, or III - Fleet Operations Division (2502397) TxDOT's Fleet Operations Division is seeking 1-2 Equipment Mechanics I, II, or III based in Austin, TX. Performs repair/maintenance and inspection for fleet vehicles and equipment in the Fleet Operations Division Shop. Work may include maintenance and repair of heavy equipment used in highway/bridge construction and inspection of work performed by contracted vendors. May contact other governmental agencies and private contractors. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; unusual issues are referred to the supervisor. Equipment Mechanic I, II & III — Responsibilities
Adjusts brakes and replaces brake system parts, including air brake and anti-lock braking systems. Analyzes and interprets computerized diagnostic equipment information. Completes repair order paperwork and enters data into the fleet information management system. Maintains and repairs heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance of highways/bridges. Checks lighting and wiring to ensure proper functioning of headlights, spotlights, tail lights, and parking lights. Performs preventive maintenance, inspections, and repairs on motor vehicles/equipment; moves items related to these activities as required. Performs quality assurance/analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment. Prepares vehicles for use by verifying required safety features such as first aid kits, fire extinguishers, and mobile radios. Troubleshoots, tests, and repairs electrical systems, electronic ignitions, and fuel injection systems. Uses computerized diagnostic analyzer systems and performs complex diagnostics on vehicles/equipment. Performs other responsibilities as assigned. Additional Responsibilities by Level
Equipment Mechanic II
— Trains less experienced technicians; travels and performs work in other shops statewide as required. Equipment Mechanic III
— Leads and trains less experienced technicians; performs duties of the Shop Coordinator in their absence. Minimum Qualifications

Experience : Equipment Mechanic I — 2 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair Equipment Mechanic II — 4 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair Equipment Mechanic III — 7 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair Associate's degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology may substitute for 2 years of experience Certificates of course completion from a Technical Training Institute in Automotive and Diesel Technology may substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis Licenses and Certifications
Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle. Must have a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or have obtained one within 120 calendar days from course registration. You will have 2 attempts to pass the written and driving exams. Preferred Qualifications

Subject to extreme cold and heat; exposure to conditions outside 32-100°F for extended periods Subject to noise; may require wearing protective gear Medium work: lift up to 50 lbs at a time; frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs Kneeling and bending to work Pre-employment physical required Must pass a drug test prior to employment in accordance with 49 CFR Part 40; medical marijuana not authorized as a valid explanation for positive test result Must be able to report for duty within 60 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergencies May be required to work alternate schedules during emergency situations (e.g., adverse weather) Travel to other district/division shops within the state as needed Job Classification
