Overview
VTG is currently seeking a Carpenter to join our team in San Diego, CA at NAS North Island.
What will you do?
Carpenter: measure, cut, construct, install, repair, and modify wood, composite, and wood substitute items where fit and accuracy are within allowable limits to produce a serviceable product. Apply standard measurements, specifications, and instructions when constructing, installing, or repairing items such as frame structures, decking, partitions, shelving, doors, forms, siding, and scaffolds.
Apply a general knowledge of wood, composite materials, wood substitutes, and woodworking techniques, and use basic shop mathematics to plan, measure, and lay out materials according to dimensional requirements and specifications.
Typically follow specific instructions aided by templates, preplanned or precut materials.
Set up and operate a wide variety of woodworking machines and tools.
Assemble items using joining techniques such as miters, rabbets, dados, biscuit joints, and mortise and tenon; use glues and adhesives to secure wood pieces, veneers, and countertops.
Use wood, metal, and various composite materials when installing or replacing interior partitions, flooring, panels, suspended ceilings, countertops, and moldings.
Interpret drawings, blueprints, and specifications independently to determine layout, work sequences, and types of lumber or related materials.
Plan and carry out projects from initial layout to completion.
Ensure accuracy, spacing, fit, structural soundness, and finished appearance.
Experience & Education
High School degree or equivalent required.
Carpenters at this level have thorough knowledge of wood and wood substitute materials and construction techniques.
Skilled in operating general and precision carpentry and woodworking equipment to produce finished products with precise fits, accurate dimensions, and acceptable appearance.
Ability to read and interpret basic blueprints and sketches; interpret complex instructions, sketches, blueprints, and building codes.
Ability to measure layouts and construct footings for structural foundations; construct concrete forms and related structures with guidance; use advanced shop mathematics for complex layouts (arcs, tangents, circles).
Skilled in setting up and operating industrial woodworking machinery (e.g., routers, band and scroll saws, drill presses).
Determine proper grade, size, and type of lumber or wood substitute material required for the job.
Proficient in using power and hand tools and other woodworking equipment (portable drills, clippers, joiners, shavers, tenoners, sanders, routers, nailers, saws, drills, table saws).
Capable of setting up and adjusting stationary power equipment and maintaining equipment (e.g., checking squareness of blades, lubricating machines, sharpening blades).
Mill heavy lumber, cut bevels, rabbets, chamfers, grooves, and compound miter joints; apply plastic laminates to wood surfaces on countertops, cabinets, desks, and tables.
Minimum qualifications: experience within the last five years; U.S. citizenship; individuals released from Military Service with other than “Honorable Discharges” do not meet minimum qualifications; ability to read and interpret data; ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.

Physical capabilities include walking, running, climbing, crawling, jumping, and other similar activities.
Must be able to endure extreme climate conditions and work in an outdoor setting.
Pay Range: VTG’s estimated starting pay range is $33.21/hour for the geographic location. Offers may consider work experience, education, skill level, market considerations, and contractual requirements which may cause an offer to fall outside of this range.
