Switchgear Field Service Technician – Critical Facilities – Nationwide Travel . Multiple opportunities for both Senior and mid-level Switchgear Field Service Technicians with a nationwide market leader of Power Distribution Solutions, specializing in Switchgear and Controls for mission-critical environments. Services include Installations, Retrofits, Upgrades, Turnkey Electrical Solutions, and Preventive & Corrective Maintenance of UPS, Switchgear, Generators, and PLC Systems. The Switchgear Field Service Technician will support mission-critical power distribution systems, including commissioning, troubleshooting, maintenance, and emergency support for low and medium voltage switchgear, PLCs, generator controls, UPS systems, PDUs, ATS, STS, and power monitoring systems at data centers. The role is approximately 70% new construction/startups and 30% PMs, troubleshooting, and retrofits. Requires strong field service experience and the ability to read one-line diagrams. Candidates will support regional and nationwide projects across the U.S. Responsibilities
Perform start-ups, commissioning, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting for low and medium voltage switchgear, generator controls, PLCs, UPS systems, and power distribution units Perform Relay Testing – GE, SEL, etc Work with physical layer to set up protective elements Read, interpret, and update one-line diagrams and schematics to diagnose and resolve issues Conduct preventive maintenance (PMs), troubleshooting, and retrofits to optimize the performance and reliability of mission-critical power distribution systems Utilize electrical test equipment such as Voltmeter, Megger, Ammeter, Hi-Pot, and Ratiometer to diagnose system performance Work with generator control systems and power management strategies to ensure seamless operation Support and develop Methods of Procedures (MOPs) for testing, maintenance, and emergency responses Provide high-quality customer service, offering technical recommendations and guidance to clients Complete detailed Field Service Reports and ensure documentation is submitted in a timely manner Coordinate site activities with project managers, contractors, and customer representatives to maintain project schedules Maintain safety compliance by adhering to OSHA and industry safety standards Travel nationwide as required for project assignments Provide documentation of hardware, software, and technical expertise while maintaining and cultivating customer relations Qualifications
Technical degree (DeVry, Lincoln Tech, etc.), Military Training, or certification in electrical engineering, power systems, or related field a plus 3-6+ years of field service experience in electrical testing, commissioning, and maintenance of switchgear, generator controls, PLCs, and power distribution systems Strong troubleshooting experience down to the component level on Protective Relays and Breakers, PDUs, STS, ATS, Switchgear, and Power Monitoring Systems, Control Panels, etc Proficiency in reading and interpreting one-line diagrams and electrical schematics Experience with protective relays from manufacturers such as SEL, ABB, GE, Siemens is a plus Generator Controls / Sync / OEM factory training or experience with Kohler, CAT, Cummins, Generac is a plus Switchgear OEM factory training or experience with Siemens, ABB, Mitsubishi, Eaton, Schneider, Fuji is a plus UPS OEM factory training or experience with Emerson / Liebert / Vertiv; APC / MGE / Schneider, or Eaton / Powerware / PDI is a plus Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and experience using CMMS or field service software Knowledge of general computer hardware & software applications Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including strong customer service abilities Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., perform bending/kneeling, and work in confined spaces when required Clean driving record and ability to travel nationwide for projects and emergency support Willingness to work nights & weekends when necessary / be on call when needed Military experience is a huge plus (Navy nukes – EMN, ETN, MMNs; Seabees; Army – Power Generation; Air Force – Power Production; Generator Techs; Maritime, Coast Guard, Army National Guard, etc) Submittal Instructions
