The City of Gardner Building Department is seeking a Local Building Inspector. The Local Inspector will work under the administrative directive of the Building Commissioner in accordance with applicable provisions of the Massachusetts general laws and local ordinances. The Local Building Inspector will perform highly responsible functions of a technical nature requiring considerable judgment in the application, interpretation, and enforcement of the Massachusetts building codes, zoning ordinances and other applicable regulations. This position could be either full-time or part-time.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Enforce the Massachusetts State Building Code, Gardner City Code, and Zoning Ordinance.
Enforce all laws associated with the Massachusetts State Building Code, Specialized Codes, Fire Code, and Zoning Ordinance.
Review applications associated with the repair, alteration, and construction of any structure or system for residential, commercial, and industrial purposes.
Performs all inspections of properties with active building permits.
Performs periodic inspections of properties as required by the Massachusetts State Building Code.
Investigates all complaints that fall within the jurisdiction of the building official.
Assists other city departments such as police, fire, and health on investigations as requested.
Draft reports associated with required inspections and investigations.
• Minimum of 5 years of verifiable construction supervisory experience in building construction or design• Current Construction Supervisor’s License (CSL) strongly preferred. Applicant may also have a 2 yr. associate degree in a field related to building construction or design.

• Ability to work effectively under time constraints and meet deadlines.• Ability to operate a personal computer utilizing Microsoft windows environment and other required programs.• Ability to work on and prioritize several on-going tasks.• Must have the ability to communicate effectively, in oral and written form, with the general public as well as with other City and Commonwealth officials.• Ability to work independently.• Must perform all aspects of job responsibilities with honesty and integrity.• Must have a valid driver’s license.• Frequent light to moderate physical effort required to perform inspections. Must be able to access all areas of a construction site.• Frequently required to spend several hours walking or standing.
