This staff member must be able to take a leadership role in CSS with assisting with teaching of new staff or re-training of fellow staff and must be competent and physically able to perform all the key functions of the position (Decontam, Assembly, Sterilization and Distribution) including lifting a minimum of 40 pounds, pushing, pulling, lifting, carrying repetitively for a full 8 hour shift to perform all duties in CSS independently. They will perform quality assurance checks in the decontam, assembly, sterilization or distribution areas and act accordingly. This individual must have knowledge of CSS operations, be able to create assignment sheets as per protocol, and can run the floor independently with no supervisor. They should be able to review the OR schedule, prepare documentation and obtain appropriate pick lists for add-on cases, and ensure accurate and timely picking of case carts. They may assist the Supervisor as necessary in compiling statistics and performing special projects. They must understand the importance of completing all required documentation and record-keeping. They must be able to solve problems using excellent communication skills and medical terminology in potentially stressful OR situations. They are able to perform all job responsibilities of a CSS Technician I and provide high-quality service in an efficient manner to meet customer needs. EEO/AA/Disability/Veteran
Responsibilities
Assembly of Instrumentation
Efficiently provides appropriate instrumentation for surgical procedures, ensuring accuracy, proper functioning, processing, storage and usage according to scheduled and anticipated demand as measured by supervisor and end-of-shift inspections.
Case Cart Preparation
Demonstrates ability to manage and execute the case cart picking function using proper pick sheets, adherence to standard setup, quality assurance and timely delivery of end product as measured by SE, QA and reported incidents.
Dispensing and Storage Functions
Processes user requests with a high degree of accuracy in an efficient and courteous manner as measured by supervisor observation and OR staff follow-up.
Communication/Information
Manages information received or required during the daily course of activities as observed by the supervisor and Manager.
Sterilization Function
Performs the sterilization procedure in a timely and accurate manner, ensuring strict adherence to all documentation requirements as measured by daily supervisory QA of sterilization function at beginning and end of shift.
House Set Processing Function
Efficiently and accurately assembles and packages instruments and supplies in preparation and packaging area of CSS according to priority needs and daily assignment as measured by supervisor, daily worksheets and supervisor end-of-shift rounds.
Decontamination Function
Demonstrates ability to manage and perform decontamination process to prevent transference of organisms to the sterile area of CSS as observed by the supervisor and Tech II staff and as measured by end-of-shift inspections.
Training and Education Standards
Assists Educator/Lead tech with the training or re-educating of new and current staff on the policies, procedures and protocols of Central Sterile Supply according to the department training program, demonstrating, observing and documenting practices and competencies. Demonstrates ability to manage, execute and train staff as measured by supervisor.
Supervisory Assistance
Provides supervisory assistance within the department to develop and maintain staff competencies, ensure adherence to standards and implement systems changes.
Completes non-therapeutic functions under the direction of MD, PA, APRN or RN
Place IV solutions in appropriate storage area within Central Supply.
Qualifications
EDUCATION High school graduate or equivalent. A current Sterile Processing Distribution Technician Certification from CBSPD or IAHCSMM. EXPERIENCE Competent and physically able to perform all duties in CSS independently (Decontam, Assembly, Sterilization and Distribution) and 1 year of experience in CSS at Bridgeport Hospital. Minimum 3.0 most recent annual evaluation score and no current written disciplinary actions, and completion of a Preceptor Training Program offered by the Surgical Services educator or ODE. LICENSURE Central Sterile Tech. Cert required from CSPD or IAHCSMM SPECIAL SKILLS This staff member must be able to take a leadership role in CSS, assisting with teaching of new staff or re-training of fellow staff. They perform quality assurance checks in decontam, assembly, sterilization or distribution and act accordingly. They must have knowledge of CSS operations, be able to create assignment sheets as per protocol, and run the floor independently with no supervisor. Knowledgeable of Operating Room surgical instrumentation and Quality Assurance practices. They must solve problems using excellent communication skills and medical terminology in potentially stressful OR and CSS environments. New Tech II must complete the CSS Tech II orientation program under the direction of a seasoned Tech II or Supervisor. PHYSICAL DEMAND Must be able to lift a minimum of 40 pounds repetitively. Majority of tasks require the ability to push, pull, bend and stand throughout 8-hour shifts and perform fine hand manipulations.
