Overview The Medical Technologist Supervisor provides leadership and expertise in clinical testing, phlebotomy, client services, billing, and other laboratory support functions.
Operational Responsibilities
Monitors all aspects of operations, including daily monitoring of team member schedules, job performance and productivity, oversight of quality and safety standards, and compliance with regulatory requirements.
Coordinates test schedules, quality control procedures, troubleshooting, maintenance of procedure manuals, training and documentation, and inventory control in primary areas of responsibility.
Performs technical specialist duties, reporting results for all areas where competency has been verified.
Identifies and resolves testing and quality control problems, maintains SOPs, and makes initial SOP changes as required.
Provides timely notification of abnormal results and communicates findings to ordering physicians and customers.
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire
Certified as a Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) by the National Credentialing Agency (NCA) or American Medical Technologists (AMT) National Certifying Agency, or equivalent ASCP Specialty or Categorical certification.
Maintains required certification and accrues continuing education hours in accordance with the Board of Certification Credential Maintenance Program (CMP).
Individuals with ASCP certification prior to January 1, 2004 are exempt from the certification maintenance program.
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Continued Employment
Current MT or MLS certification by ASCP, CLS by NCA, AMT, or equivalent ASCP Specialty or Categorical certification.
Experience Required
Minimum of four (4) years of clinical work experience as a Medical Technologist, including at least three (3) years in a leadership role (senior/lead level with increased responsibility).
Experience Preferred Not specified.
Education/Training Required
Bachelor’s Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science (BSCLS) from an accredited program or a Bachelor’s Degree in a Biological Science with graduation from an NAACLS‑accredited CLS/MT certificate program.
Alternatively, a Bachelor’s Degree in a Biological Science with 10+ years of on‑the‑job training in a hospital health‑care environment performing high‑complexity testing or a Master’s Degree in Clinical Lab Science (MSCLS) from an accredited program.
Education/Training Preferred
Master’s Degree in Clinical Lab Science (MSCLS) from an accredited program.
Independent Actions Required
Performance, evaluation, and reporting of procedures outlined in standard operating procedures.
Notification of abnormal values to ordering physicians and customer service communications.
Resolution of testing and quality control problems and maintenance of SOPs.
Completion of required continuing education hours per year.
Supervisory Responsibilities (if Applicable)
Perform technical specialist duties in the laboratory.
Coordinate test schedules, quality control procedures, troubleshooting, maintenance of procedure manuals, training, documentation, and inventory control.
Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Show a strong and energetic commitment to laboratory efficiency and quality.
Act as a positive role model for peers and coworkers.
Additional Position Requirements
Rotating weekends as required.
Holiday scheduling as required.
On‑call availability, as required, for emergency coverage on any shift.
Physical Requirements Lifting
Strong recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, speaking, writing, reading, logical thinking; fast‑paced environment; ability to handle multiple priorities and intense customer interactions.
