Overview

The Laboratory Scientist/MLS/CLS/MT – Hematology position provides accurate and timely testing and results to requesting physicians and other healthcare professionals for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease. Responsible for the analysis of a variety of biological specimens and performs complex lab tests. Demonstrates excellent customer service to internal and external customers and maintains a positive, professional interpersonal style with a strong commitment to teamwork. Responsibilities

Performs laboratory tests according to established procedures. Operates, maintains, troubleshoots, and validates laboratory equipment. Performs, documents quality control, and follows established quality assurance guidelines. Educates and trains laboratory personnel, students, and residents. Maintains laboratory supplies and inventory. May perform specimen collection, specimen processing and phlebotomy as applicable to the work location. Ensures the laboratory maintains accreditation standards from CAP, Joint Commission (TJ) and other accrediting agencies as required. Performs other duties as assigned. Patient Population

Provides equitable care appropriate to the age of patients served on the assigned unit, with knowledge of growth and development and the ability to assess data reflective of patient status to meet age-specific requirements as described in departmental policies and procedures. Age ranges include Neonates (0-4 weeks), Infants (1-12 months), Pediatrics (1-12 years), Adolescents (13-17 years), Adults (18-64 years), and Geriatrics (65+ years). Education and Qualifications

Education

Required:

Bachelor’s Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science (BSCLS) from an accredited program or a Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Science with NAACLS-accredited CLS/MT certificate program OR a Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Science with 5+ years of on-the-job training in a hospital health care environment in a lab discipline performing high-complexity testing in blood banking, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, immunology and clinical microscopy (categorical or generalist certification required). Preferred:

Master’s Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science (MSCLS) from an accredited program. Licensing/Certification

Required:

MLS graduates hired on graduation must obtain certification within 6 months (MT/MLS/CLS) by ASCP, NCA, AMT or equivalent; or specialty/categorical certification as applicable. Preferred:

ASCP MT/MLS/CLS certification. Minimum Qualifications

Experience:

Entry-level Medical Laboratory Scientist graduate. Other:

Ability to work rotating weekends and holidays, accept on-call coverage as required, and support emergency coverage on any shift. Working Conditions

Periods of high stress and fluctuating workloads; general office environment. May be exposed to adverse weather, noise, bright lights, hazardous substances, and body fluids. May require travel to off-site locations and exposure to routine infectious materials. Adheres to universal precautions and infection control policies. Physical and Mental Demands

Physical: Lifting up to 100+ lbs (assistance may be required), pushing/pulling, standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, climbing, and bending. Dexterity and visual requirements include color vision and acuity (far and near). Mental/Sensory: Strong recall, reasoning, problem solving, listening and communication skills; ability to handle fast-paced environments, manage multiple priorities, and endure frequent interruptions.
