Overview
A Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), also known as a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) in some states, is a healthcare professional who provides basic nursing care under the supervision of registered nurses (RNs) and physicians. LPNs monitor patient health, administer medications, and provide comfort and support to patients and their families. Responsibilities
Direct Patient Care
Monitor and record patient vital signs (blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration) Administer prescribed medications via oral, topical, and injection routes Perform basic wound care, dressing changes, and catheter care Assist patients with activities of daily living (bathing, eating, mobility) Collect specimens for laboratory testing Observe and report changes in patient condition to supervising RN or physician
Patient Monitoring and Assessment
Conduct routine health assessments and screenings Monitor patient responses to treatments and medications Recognize and report signs of complications or adverse reactions Maintain accurate documentation of patient care and observations Assist with diagnostic procedures and tests
Medication Administration
Prepare and administer medications according to physician orders Verify patient identity and medication accuracy using safety protocols Monitor patients for medication side effects and therapeutic responses Maintain medication records and inventory Educate patients about medication purposes and side effects
Patient Education and Support
Provide basic health education to patients and families Teach patients about disease management and self-care techniques Offer emotional support and comfort to patients and families Assist with discharge planning and follow-up care instructions Promote patient safety and infection control practices
Documentation and Communication
Maintain detailed patient records and care plans Document all nursing interventions and patient responses Communicate effectively with healthcare team members Participate in shift reports and team meetings Ensure compliance with healthcare regulations and facility policies
Equipment and Supply Management
Operate and maintain basic medical equipment Ensure proper sterilization and cleaning of equipment Monitor and order supplies as needed Maintain clean and organized work environment
Required Qualifications
Current state licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse Current BLS certification Previous healthcare experience Clear background check and drug screening Shift Details
