Merrick is seeking an experienced
Mechanical Engineer
to join our Energy, Manufacturing & Bioprocessing Business Unit. This full‑time, direct hire position will be responsible for engineering, design, coordination, client communications and construction administration.
Position will be located in
Newport News, VA or Richmond, VA .
We support a hybrid work schedule.
Annual salary range:
$102,400.00 - $132,600.00
(may vary based on experience).
Responsibilities
Apply your knowledge in Food & Personal Care, Bioprocessing, Oil & Gas, Chemical, Power, Manufacturing and Industrial and shipbuilding facilities/systems (Conceptual Design).
Ensure understanding and compliance with owner requirements and corporate standards related to mechanical design.
Confirm and review applicable codes and standards such as IBC, ASME, API, PIP and NFPA.
Establish and document the mechanical systems basis of design; provide clarifications, qualifications and design assumptions for relevant design issues.
Develop scopes of work based on RFPs and pre‑bid meetings with clients.
Work with owner and construction management to validate construction costs and provide value‑engineering options.
Interpret scopes of work and translate them into executable project plans.
Manage project mechanical engineering and design team and oversee all aspects of the mechanical scope related primarily to equipment and piping.
Perform and document engineering calculations for selecting code‑compliant systems and equipment.
Size and select equipment and systems.
Oversee pipe‑stress analysis using CAESAR II, NozzlePro and similar software.
Support the design of cohesive, technically acceptable, and optimized piping systems.
Perform detailed reviews of isometrics, piping plans, specifications, P&IDs and other design documents.
Mentor other mechanical engineers and designers.
Contribute to construction documents: drawings, specifications, calculations and equipment datasheets.
Coordinate field oversight and RFI resolution.
Conduct field inspections and review reports.
Work with Project Engineer/Manager to meet project schedules and deliverable requirements.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from an ABET‑accredited program.
Eight (8)+ years of industry experience.
Registered Professional Engineer or ability to obtain PE within the first year.
Experience with Design/Build and EPC projects.
Experience leading engineering teams on design projects.
U.S. citizenship required for client projects.
Desired Qualifications
Pipe‑stress analysis experience using CAESAR II.
Significant experience designing and installing retrofits and upgrades at manufacturing, industrial, and shipbuilding facilities.
HVAC and plumbing design for industrial facilities.
Knowledge of ASME B31.3, B31.1, ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel codes, PIP and API codes.
Experience managing personnel and project engineering.
