Asphalt Paving Equipment Mechanic
Location: Middleboro, MA
Full‑time position in Austal’s Construction Equipment group. The role focuses on diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing heavy‑duty machinery used in asphalt paving operations—pavers, rollers, milling machines, and related equipment—ensuring optimal performance and minimizing downtime on construction sites through preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and necessary repairs to mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and pneumatic systems.
Responsibilities
Perform inspections and basic diagnosis
Remove and install parts, and implement optional accessories
Provide general repairs and testing
Apply Alta’s Guiding Principles to daily work
Assist in in‑house training to acquire additional diagnostic skills
Maintain consistent, regular attendance and be ready at the designated start time
Qualifications
Four years of heavy equipment or over‑the‑road (OTR) repair experience (required)
Two years of experience with asphalt paving equipment is preferred
Strong mechanical aptitude with knowledge of engines, power trains, hydraulics, and electrical systems
Own plumbing and diagnostic tools
Positive attitude and high energy
Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook
Intermediate reading and writing abilities in English, including interpreting safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedural manuals
Basic mathematical skills in currency, weight, volume, and distance calculations
Intermediate reasoning skills to solve complex problems with multiple variables
Physical Demands / Work Environment Physical/Sensory Functions: Regular standing, walking, hand use, reaching; frequent talking/hearing; climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling; occasional sitting. Lift/Move Functions: Regular lifting up to 25 lbs; frequent lifting 26–50 lbs; occasional lifting 51–100+ lbs. Work Environment: Regular exposure to moving mechanical parts; frequent exposure to fumes or airborne particles; outdoor weather conditions; occasional wet or humid conditions; risk of electrical shock and vibration.
