Cardiac Sonographer – WVU Medicine Thomas Hospitals
Join a team of advanced cardiac imaging specialists performing non‑invasive ultrasound procedures to diagnose and treat patients. The role requires the highest level of technical skill, patient communication, and documentation to support cardiovascular care.
Core Duties and Responsibilities
Perform advanced non‑invasive cardiac ultrasound procedures in the Cardiac Laboratory.
Obtain patient history and answer questions to ensure procedure accuracy and patient comfort.
Measure cardiovascular structures and calculate quantitative data for physician interpretation.
Document all procedures and findings in EPIC for proper billing and chart audit.
Notify medical staff of significant abnormal findings and collaborate with the care team.
Maintain equipment, rooms, and work areas clean and orderly.
Pre‑screen patients, schedule exams, and manage processor workflow for timely completion.
Provide educational support to junior sonographers and act as a preceptor during orientation.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduate of a Medical Imaging program.
Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) via ARDMS or Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) via CCI within 12 months of hire.
Basic Life Support certification within 30 days of hire.
Physical Requirements
Ability to sit for extended periods.
Ability to lift, push, or pull a minimum of 40 pounds.
Hearing and visual acuity sufficient to perform non‑invasive imaging.
Working Environment
Clinical setting with a collaborative health‑care team.
Skills and Abilities
Excellent interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills.
Strong motivation for continuous self‑development.
Collaborative team player supporting shared group goals.
Clinical Ladder and Advancement
Level 1
– No experience required; all new sonographers initiate here.
Level 2
– Meets prior level requirements; one year of registered experience and complete Skill Set Tech 1.
Level 3
– One continuing education pathway; three years of registered experience; skill set competency through Tech 1 and Tech 2.
Level 4
– One continuing education pathway; five years of registered experience; skill set competency through Tech 1, Tech 2, and Tech 3.
Additional Job Information
Rotating call required.
40 hour work week.
