Overview Under general supervision, to perform highly specialized imaging procedures and mammography in addition to standard imaging procedures in varied hospital and clinic settings for use in medical and surgical diagnosis and treatment.

Typical Duties

Performs standard and complex mammography procedures;

Correctly obtains and identifies images and manipulates and sends images via the Picture Archive Communication System (PACS) network;

Operates and troubleshoots equipment, as necessary;

May perform routine administrative tasks;

Assists the physician in administering medications during special procedure exams;

Operates a variety of imaging and fluoroscopic equipment in performing a variety of imaging examinations independently;

Performs imaging procedures in the Operating Room, Trauma, Burn, Intensive Care, or other units in the hospital and outlying clinics;

Instructs, prepares, and positions patient and equipment for imaging procedure;

Computes relevant factors, selects a technique appropriate to the particular exam being performed, adjusts the equipment, and obtains images as instructed;

Tracks each procedure and associated supplies via the hospital information system;

Assists physician during imaging procedures;

Assists in training student technologists and radiology residents;

Cleans and restocks procedure rooms and ancillary areas and maintains proper inventory levels;

May transport patients to and from the department;

Reviews the images, including technique, positioning, and identification (patient identification, left/right, body part, etc.);

Performs other assigned imaging procedures;

Adheres to all applicable Federal, State, and local regulations, including JCAHO and HIPAA;

May be assigned as a Disaster Service Worker (DSW), as required;

Performs other related duties, as required.

Education and Training Knowledge and abilities are attained through education, training, and one year of full-time experience as a diagnostic imaging technologist, including demonstrated competence in mammography equivalent to the Diagnostic Imaging Technologist I – Mammography level.

Training and Experience Note : The required knowledge and abilities are attained through one (1) year of full-time experience as a diagnostic imaging technologist, including demonstrated competence in the performance of mammography equivalent to the Diagnostic Imaging Technologist I – Mammography level.

Special Requirements

Possess and maintain, in good standing and without restrictions, a license issued by the State of California to practice as a Certified Radiologic Technologist (CRT).

Possess and maintain, in good standing and without restrictions, a California Fluoroscopy license.

Possess and maintain, in good standing and without restrictions, a California Mammographic Radiologic Technology certificate.

Upon appointment, obtain a Basic Life Saving Certification (BLS), in good standing, and maintain certification for the duration of employment in this classification.

Ability to travel to alternate locations in the course of work. If driving, possession of a valid California driver’s license prior to appointment and the ability to qualify for and maintain a County driver authorization.

*As a condition of employment, pursuant to California Government Code Sections 3100-3109 and Local Ordinance, all County of Santa Clara employees are designated Disaster Service Workers (DSWs), including extra help. A DSW is required to complete all assigned DSW-related training, and in the event of an emergency, return to work as ordered.

Methods of positioning patients for standard and specialized diagnostic imaging procedures;

Principles of radiation physics;

Principles of image processing and development;

English usage, style, grammar, punctuation, and spelling;

Common computer systems and applications.

Perform complex diagnostic imaging procedures;

Accurately bill complex procedures and supplies in a timely fashion;

Provide safe and appropriate care to all patients, even in stressful situations;

Troubleshoot, document, and communicate equipment problems;

Physical Requirements

Stand and sit for long periods of time and exercise a moderate amount of physical exertion, stamina, and manual dexterity in the handling of patients and equipment;
