Overview
The Inpatient Coder 3 position reports directly to the Supervisor of Coding. Key responsibilities of the role include reviewing documentation in inpatient and/or IVR (interventional radiology) medical records, accurately and completely assigning ICD-10-CM diagnostic and ICD-10-PCS/CPT-4 HCPCS procedural codes to the greatest specificity, and abstracting demographic and coding information. Responsibilities
Reviewing documentation in inpatient and/or IVR medical records and assigning the most accurate DRG/APC when appropriate. Code and abstract medical records with high accuracy; assign ICD-10-CM diagnosis and ICD-10-PCS/CPT-4 HCPCS procedural codes to the greatest specificity. Accurately abstract all required patient demographic data into the EMR. Assign correct DRG/APC and meet productivity standards. Query providers when needed to clarify codes. Contribute to the CFB goals by resolving coding edits and correcting issues in a timely manner (1-2 business days). Complete and route problem accounts, ready to code, high-dollar, and other accounts daily to code near the goal date. Complete assigned work by goal date; assist with unassigned or backlogged accounts. Mentor new coders and assist with missing documentation or other work queues as needed. If proficient, assist with observation, same-day surgery, outpatient and emergency coding when required. Perform other duties as assigned and comply with WellStar policies and standards. Required Minimum Education
High School Diploma or GED Required Minimum Experience
Minimum 3 years of acute care facility inpatient and/or IVR coding experience Required Minimum Skills
Demonstrated maintenance of a high accuracy in abstracting, coding and DRG assignment while meeting productivity requirements in previous roles Ability to work in a remote environment Computer/data entry experience Ability to communicate with various members of the healthcare team Ability to use Microsoft Excel and Word Preferred Certification(s)
