Congenital Syphilis Nurse

Responsibilities
Evaluate patients for Congenital Syphilis risk factors, clinical presentation, and screening results in various settings (e.g., patient’s home or public health clinic).
Collaborate with the authorizing physician to develop treatment plans, establish mutual goals, and monitor treatment response.
Engage patients in behavior modification to promote treatment adherence.
Provide consultation, training, and technical assistance to agency staff, care recipients, provider agencies, and the medical community to ensure treatment is completed.
Collect specimens for laboratory testing (urine, blood via venipuncture or fingerstick, self-collection swabs) and maintain detailed records of patient encounters in state databases.
Provide community education and act as a technical consultant to individuals, providers, and stakeholders on current CDC/DSHS testing, diagnoses, and treatment of Congenital Syphilis and other STIs and HIV.
Participate in multidisciplinary meetings and trainings to promote consistent and optimal patient care.
Perform detection, intervention, reporting, notification, and referral activities related to CS infections and high-risk contacts; ensure statutory disease reporting and adherence to guidelines.
Consult with regional medical director and subject matter experts on complicated Congenital Syphilis or HIV/STI cases as needed.
Assist with emergency preparedness and response duties and agency continuity of operations during disasters as assigned.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
Comprehensive knowledge of HIV/STI program standards, policies, and procedures.
Knowledge of CDC HIV/STI treatment protocols and guidelines; epidemiology and case management techniques.
Ability to comply with confidentiality guidelines and to work within DSHS policies and guidelines.
Skill in performing basic/abbreviated adult and pediatric physical assessment and obtaining clinical history.
Skill in case analysis, clinical case management, and interpreting treatment data.
Skill in effective communication (oral and written) and in phlebotomy and specimen processing; immunizations administration.
Proficiency with PC software (Microsoft Office, Adobe, NEDSS/THISIS, CMIS).
Ability to interpret public health laws and regulations; conduct objective nursing assessments; supervise contact and outbreak investigations.
Ability to work independently and in multidisciplinary teams; strong time management and professional judgment; ability to travel.
Qualifications
Must be registered as a Registered Nurse in the State of Texas with an active, unrestricted license.
Current and valid Texas driver’s license.
RN licensed in Texas or compact license; at least two years of nursing experience with at least one year in the last five years working with people at risk for HIV/STD; BSN preferred; bilingual in Spanish preferred.
Graduation from a Nursing Program accredited by the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners.
Experience with computer software applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, electronic health/medical records systems, and internet.
