Radiological Technologist Summary of Primary Function

The Radiological Technologist is a certified health professional who, under the direction of an authorized user, applies the art and skill of diagnostic imaging through the safe and effective use of ionizing radiation, in diagnostic radiology.

Essential Job Functions

Obtain patient’s clinical history and appropriate lab work ensuring information is documented and available for use by a licensed practitioner.

Position and immobilize patient to best demonstrate anatomic area of interest, respecting patient ability and comfort.

Apply principles of radiation protection to minimize exposure to patient, self, and others.

Perform radiographic procedures by selecting and operating imaging equipment, and/or associated accessories to successfully perform procedures.

Verify informed consent and complete pre- and post-procedure documentation.

Assist licensed practitioner with fluoroscopic and specialized radiography procedures. Apply appropriate aseptic surgical technique as needed.

Perform timeout as required per policy.

Identify, prepare and/or administer medications/contrast as prescribed by a licensed practitioner.

Receive relays and document verbal, written, and electronic orders in the patient’s medical record.

Evaluate images for technical quality.

Document patient dose exposures.

Professionally interact with physicians, technologist, physician offices, hospital staff, patient family members and patients.

Operate radiographic equipment and accessories in accordance with the principles of ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable).

Education Associate’s from an ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists) accredited institute (preferred).

Certifications

Certification and Registration with ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists) (required).

State Licensure (preferred, unless required by the state where the job is being performed).

BLS Basic Life Support, American Heart Association (required at hire for Roper St Francis Healthcare locations; preferred at hire, required prior to independent patient care at BSMH).

Training

EPIC Electronic Health Record (EHR) (preferred).

Picture archiving communication system (PACS) (preferred).

Experience 1 year experience in radiation safety and patient care (preferred). Experience with Radiology Information System (preferred).

Working Conditions Periods of high stress and fluctuating workloads may occur. May be exposed to physical altercations and verbal abuse. May be required to use physical restraints. May be exposed to high noise levels and bright lights. May be exposed to limited hazardous substances or body fluids. May be exposed to human blood and other potentially infectious materials. May have periods of constant interruptions. General office environment. Required to car travel to off-site locations, prolonged periods of working alone.
