Job Overview

Processes, embeds, sections and stains surgical pathology materials to assist the pathologist in making diagnostic recommendations. Processes routine surgical pathology specimens from login through slide filing and charge issuance. Assists in the preparation of stat frozen sections. Prepares and verifies special stains. Prepares reagents and maintains equipment in good operating condition. Performs all QC & QA as dictated by accreditation agencies. Maintains an adequate supplies inventory. Reviews and updates policies and procedures biennially. Applies the knowledge and skills necessary to assess data reflective of each patient's status and provide the care appropriate to the age of the patients served, i.e., infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric. Day shift Per Diem Essential Functions

Maintains positive specimen ID from OR to Lab through the transport, order entry, gross dissection, microtomy, embedding, staining, report generation, block and slide filing processes. (100% compliance required.) Prepares slides for pathologist review and interpretation within departmental timelines in an efficient and cost-effective manner on a daily basis. Provides specimen pickup throughout the facility per departmental and pathologist timelines to expedite the gross dissection and transcription of the pathology interpretation. Prepares frozen section specimens within departmental timelines. (First slide set available by 0830 hours. Specimen pickups three or more times per day. Frozen section responsiveness 15 minutes.) Maintains, troubleshoots and repairs histology equipment with supervisory oversight per departmental and manufacturer's specifications. Reviews, updates and corrects all QC, QA, PM and repair records required by accreditation agencies (CAP, AABB, JC and State of New Jersey) to ensure full compliance and accreditation. Prepares timely reagent and supply orders, coordinates repairs and staffing coverage. (Less than 2 rush orders per month.) Manages specimen storage area to minimize clutter and spill hazards from stored specimens. Handles and discards waste xylene and formaldehyde according to departmental procedures. Keeps work areas clean and free of clutter. (Discards specimens at least monthly.) Demonstrates a proactive work ethic and promotes teamwork by assisting coworkers wherever and whenever possible to complete the patient's workload efficiently. Choosing RWJBarnabas Health!
