Cabinetmaker I . The Cabinetmaker I is responsible for assisting in the production of cabinets, fixtures, architectural millwork, and wood furniture for the university. Working independently and exercising good judgment and discretion is essential to this job. Essential Functions And Responsibilities As Essential Personnel, you are expected to be available in the event of school closings, delays, shutdowns, and any emergencies, including clean-up required because of severe weather incidents. Reports to work at the required time and performs duties as assigned by the Cabinet Shop Supervisor. Assists with the set up and operation of various woodworking machines and uses hand tools to fabricate and repair wooden cabinets and high-grade furniture. Assists with marking outline or dimensions of parts on paper or lumber stock, according to blueprint or drawing specifications. Assists with trimming component parts of joints to ensure a snug fit, using hand tools, such as planes, chisels, or wood files. Assists with boring holes for insertion of screws or dowels by hand or using a boring machine. Assists with gluing, fitting, and clamping parts and subassemblies together to form a complete unit, using clamps or a clamping machine. Drives nails or other fasteners into joints at designated places to reinforce joints. Sands and scrapes surfaces and joints of articles to prepare articles for finishing. Assists with dipping, brushing, or spraying assembled articles with protective or decorative materials, such as stain, varnish, or paint. Assists with installing hardware, such as hinges, catches, and drawer pulls. Follows all safety procedures to ensure a safe working environment. Must provide own hand tools to perform and complete trade-related tasks. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs other duties as assigned. Remains abreast of existing and emerging technologies, processes, products, services, and leading industry performance benchmarks. Works effectively as a team member, embracing and fostering LU’s mission. Qualifications, Credentials, And Competencies This position requires a high school diploma or GED. Minimum of 1+ years of related experience required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience in the Cabinetmaker trade. Must be able to understand and follow directions, and work under limited supervision. Must be able to work well with the public and co-workers and present a positive attitude. Clean and professional appearance. Must be courteous, detailed-oriented, self-motivated, diligent, trustworthy, possess strong organizational skills, and well-developed communication skills. Must be able to lift up to 75+ pounds and perform duties of the Cabinetmaker trade in a typical Virginia climate.
