Role Purpose The successful candidate will be responsible for the development of new processes, products, and equipment using coating, stranding, and extrusion techniques. The candidate is expected to apply engineering expertise to support new equipment and process development activities. Specific knowledge of fiber optic cable processes and/or polymeric materials is desired, although not required.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
Participate collaboratively in project teams to develop new equipment and processes.
Conduct research, propose experiments, and analyze data to test hypotheses and enhance understanding of equipment and processes.
Provide Corning with inventive solutions toward new development efforts.
Identify and investigate new processing techniques to develop innovative cable designs.
Collaborate with research and manufacturing functions throughout the product development cycle.
Communicate and document results in technical reports and presentations.
Develop and maintain strong interaction with process development personnel located in the US, Germany, Mexico, and Poland.
Required Experience & Education
BS in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or similar technical field (e.g., physics).
Minimum 5 years’ professional experience with extrusion, mechanical design, or process development.
Functional knowledge of physical phenomena (static and dynamic physics, heat and mass transfer, fluid mechanics, optics, etc.) with a strong background in machine design, machine systems integration, or process development.
The ability to work with other engineering disciplines to create prototype and industrial process equipment design solutions.
Sound understanding of material properties and capabilities for use in machine design.
Knowledge/experience in materials processing equipment for manufacturing.
Strong problem solver that uses engineering principles and structured techniques.
Demonstrated, applied aptitude for mechanical manufacturing processes.
Ability to clearly communicate technical content to broad audiences.
Capable of performing data analysis using statistical software (JMP, MiniTab, etc.).
Desired Experience & Education
Knowledge and experience with optical fiber/cable process development or manufacturing.
Working knowledge of machine and process controls (motion control, flow control, sensor technologies, PLC programming, etc.) and safety systems.
Development experience in process or product design.
Understanding of ribboning, stranding, and extrusion processes.
Proficient in DMAIC and MEE methodologies for problem solving.
Compensation The range for this position is $85,304.00 - $117,293.00 assuming full-time status.
