The City of Overland Park has a full-time Equipment Mechanic, Senior or Equipment Mechanic I position available in Fleet Maintenance with the Public Works Department.

Summary For Equipment Mechanic, Senior This is an advanced journey-level mechanic position that maintains and services complex types of automotive equipment, including performing routine and major mechanical repairs to gasoline, diesel, and other power‑driven heavy equipment. Troubleshoots and determines corrective action to complex mechanical and electrical problems. Performs major maintenance and repair work on automobile and heavy‑duty truck chassis, drivetrain, air conditioning and exhaust emission systems. Fabricates, modifies or repairs automotive components as applicable. Where assigned, completes maintenance and repair work on emergency response vehicles such as fire apparatus and ambulances. Researches parts information and assists in their ordering. Inputs and retrieves information/data using computerized fleet management software. Assists in emergency operations, including snow removal.

Duties And Responsibilities

Inspects and diagnoses causes of malfunctioning diesel and gasoline powered vehicles and/or construction equipment.

Conducts preventative maintenance inspections to check/test vehicles and equipment for function and safe operation.

Performs field site vehicle and equipment repairs using mobile tools and equipment.

Utilizes computerized fleet management software to track equipment/vehicle maintenance and history.

Performs manual tune ups on non‑computerized gasoline and diesel powered engines.

Utilizes computerized diagnostic tools to interface with onboard vehicle electronics.

Performs welding of steel and aluminum.

Creates shop drawings for parts and/or equipment to be fabricated or modified.

Repairs, and/or rebuilds malfunctioning hydraulic components such as pumps, motors and cylinders.

Repairs, replaces and/or adjusts engine subassemblies such as water pumps, alternators or air compressors.

Inspects and diagnoses electrical problems including common 12‑volt DC circuits, multi‑plex wiring systems.

Inspects vehicle air brake systems for leaks, worn parts, and defective components.

Inspects and repairs light equipment such as saws, water pumps, jackhammers.

Replaces tires on equipment and vehicles.

Assists the Fleet Supervisor in the writing of specifications for new equipment and vehicle purchases.

Serves as the primary installer of internally fabricated and/or modified component equipment such as snow plow attachments.

Assists other mechanics in diagnosing and completing maintenance and/or repair work.

Assists the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor in ensuring work is performed in a safe manner.

Participates in snow and ice control operations.

The employee must work the days and hours necessary to perform all assigned responsibilities and tasks including snow duty.

The employee must be punctual and timely in meeting all requirements of performance.

Duties/Responsibilities specific to Equipment Mechanic and Installation responsibilities for the Police Department: Installs and/or modifies electrical wiring and equipment/hardware in the fleet.

Education & Special License(s)/Certifications

Basic education with formal technical training in the maintenance and repair of gas and diesel powered equipment, welding, hydraulic powered equipment or a combination of an equivalent level of training and experience.

Must possess a valid Class A commercial driver's license with air brake and tanker endorsements.

Must maintain an insurable driving record.

Must possess one of the following: ASE Master Certification in Heavy Duty Truck and EVT F1, or ASE Master Certification in Automobile and EVT F1, or EVT Certification Level II in either Fire Apparatus or Ambulance.

Experience

Two to three years experience at the Equipment Mechanic level, performing automotive maintenance and repair, or an equivalent level of experience.

Summary For Equipment Mechanic I Performs preventive maintenance work and makes repairs on City vehicles and equipment. Vehicle and equipment types may include fire apparatus, dump trucks, police vehicles and/or other specialized equipment. Diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical problems of varying complexities. Install ancillary equipment such as two‑way radios, light sets, computer mounts, consoles and any other necessary equipment. Maintains and repairs various vehicle/equipment makes and models including both gas and diesel powered.

Duties And Responsibilities

Inspects and diagnoses the cause of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and/or pneumatic system problems on a variety of diesel and gasoline powered heavy duty vehicles and construction equipment.

Conducts preventative maintenance inspections to check/test vehicles and equipment for function and safe operation.

Performs remote field site repairs using mobile tools and equipment.

Uses computerized fleet management software to track equipment/vehicle maintenance and history.

Tune up gasoline powered engines.

Welds broken steel components on equipment such as plows, plow frames, etc.

Creates shop designs, fabricates, and modifies parts and equipment.

Inspects, repairs, and rebuilds components in the City's specialized hydraulic systems such as pumps, motors and cylinders.

Repairs and adjusts subassemblies such as water pumps and alternators.

Inspects and determines extent of electrical problems in equipment.

Inspects vehicle air brake systems for leaks, worn parts, and defective components.

Inspects and repairs light equipment such as saws, water pumps, jackhammers.

Replaces tires on equipment and vehicles.

Assists other mechanics in the performance of mechanical repairs and provides advice and guidance as requested.

Assists with the specifications for new equipment/vehicles to be purchased. Inspects new equipment/vehicles purchased or repaired by outside vendors.

Supports snow removal operations as needed. Provides maintenance and repairs to snow removal equipment. May participate as a snow plow driver.

Duties/Responsibilities specific to Equipment Mechanic and Installation responsibilities for the Police Department: Installs and/or modifies electrical wiring and equipment/hardware in the fleet.

Education & Special License(s)/Certifications

Basic education with technical training in the maintenance and repair of gas and diesel powered equipment, welding and hydraulics, brake systems or additional equivalent experience.

Must obtain a valid CDL Class A driver's license with air brakes and tanker endorsements within six months from date of hire.

Must maintain an insurable driving record.

Must obtain within six months from date of hire and maintain accredited certifications to work on air brakes, automotive air conditioning and tire/wheel ends.

ASE certifications in these areas are preferred.

Experience

6 months to 1 year experience performing automotive maintenance and repair, or an equivalent level of experience.

Hand and eye coordination adequate to operate power tools and equipment safely and effectively.

Salary Range

Equipment Mechanic Sr: Grade E $57,853.95 – $77,145.60

Equipment Mechanic I: Grade C $47,483.00 – $63,399.20
