Public Works Maintenance Specialist I

Essential Functions
Assisting with installation, maintenance and repair projects; operating non-specialized equipment.
Cuts hedges and grass, trims and removes trees, weeds flower beds, applies pesticides, feeds plants, rakes, plants shrubs, picks up trash and litter, edges sidewalks.
Performs custodial and housekeeping tasks.
Paints buildings, structures and equipment, replaces light bulbs.
Lays pipe, builds or repairs sidewalks, repairs roofs, builds driveways.
Performs minor carpentry work, builds partition walls.
Cleans and builds catch basins, pours asphalt, patches pot holes.
Installs, maintains and repairs irrigation systems.
Repairs and replaces broken pipe, cleans drainage ditches.
Helps build and repair streets, performs minor masonry work.
Operates dump truck, riding mower and other heavy to medium equipment, and a variety of hand tools associates with job duties.
Follows safe working practices and has a working knowledge of safety practices and procedures in accordance with the City’s Safety and Health Program.
All employees will have a role in the City’s disaster preparation and/or disaster recovery efforts, as may be designated in the City Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan.
Additional Duties Performs related tasks as required. High School Diploma or G.E.D.; Valid Class E Driver’s License; Maintenance and/or construction experience. Possession of the following Training/Certifications Preferred: M.O.T.; Forklift, Pesticide Application (Right-of-Way and Ornamental); and/or Stormwater C License. A comparable amount of education, training, or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications. Must have or be able to complete IC S 100 and 700 courses within six (6) months of hire.
Special Requirements General knowledge of safe use, operation and preventative maintenance of the equipment to which assigned, skill in the use of hand tools and equipment to which assigned.
Ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions.
Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with associates.
Technical Requirements None.
Working Conditions This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping and feeling; also assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arm's length, operation of machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment, and observing general surroundings and activities.
Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
Hearing is required to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound.
Visual acuity is required for use of measuring devices.
The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards and atmospheric conditions.
