Job Description

The Medical Laboratory Technologist is responsible for performing laboratory testing on specimens, maintaining accurate records, ensuring compliance with quality control and regulatory guidelines, and supporting departmental operations.

The role requires collaboration with lab personnel, adherence to safety procedures, and maintaining high standards for patient testing and reporting.

Requirement/Must Have

Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling, processing, test analyses, reporting, and maintaining records of patient test results.

Maintain records demonstrating that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.

Analyze specimens using approved testing procedures as per department SOPs.

Review and release test results.

Follow CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and other safety guidelines.

Adhere to quality control policies and document all QC activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed.

Follow established policies whenever test systems are not within acceptable performance levels.

Identify and correct problems affecting test performance or notify senior technologist/supervisor immediately.

Document corrective actions when test systems deviate from performance specifications.

Report STAT or critical results to clients following department procedures.

Answer questions from customers or other lab personnel, if applicable.

Maintain complete records of all testing performed on-site.

Ensure reagents/test kits have received dates, expiration dates, and, if applicable, opened dates.

Review and train on new procedures.

Attend monthly department and additional training or educational meetings.

Participate in all applicable safety training sessions and be familiar with safety manuals and equipment.

Participate in government or regulatory agency inspections, if needed.

Perform other duties as directed by supervisor.

Experience

Minimum 1 year of clinical laboratory experience in high-complexity testing.

Experience in Hematology slide reading is preferred.

Responsibilities

Perform laboratory testing according to approved protocols.

Maintain and document quality control, calibrations, and maintenance activities.

Review, verify, and release test results accurately.

Troubleshoot testing issues and ensure compliance with laboratory policies and regulations.

Train on new procedures and support ongoing departmental operations.

Maintain laboratory appearance and proper reagent/test kit documentation.

Participate in department meetings, training sessions, and inspections as required.

Provide support to clients and other departments while maintaining patient confidentiality.

Skills

Solid understanding of basic laboratory testing and high-complexity procedures.

Good computer skills and adaptability to multiple computer systems.

Knowledge of QC and QA processes in laboratory settings.

Customer service and effective communication skills.

Ability to establish work priorities and manage multiple procedures simultaneously.

Fast learner, proactive, and flexible with schedule.

Qualification And Education

BS in Medical Technology preferred; or BS/BA in Chemistry or Biology, or Associate degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Technology.

Candidates previously qualified as a Technologist under 42 CFR 493.1433 are also eligible.

Foreign-educated candidates must provide detailed credential evaluation from IERF.

Must possess or be eligible for national certification as MT/MLT from a recognized organization (ASCP or AMT).

National and State licensure as required.
