Job Description The Production Mechanic (Level 3) plays a crucial role by performing a range of functions, including tasks assigned to Level 1 and Level 2 Production Mechanics. This role involves changeovers, overhauls, corrective repair work, and part fabrication on production equipment. The mechanic provides specialist services and training in machine shop practices, electricity, pipe fitting, and predictive maintenance on all production equipment.
Responsibilities
Examine, test, and measure products for adherence to quality specifications.
Check for visual defects and take corrective action as necessary.
Review production schedules at the start of each shift to determine production runs, change-overs, and scheduled maintenance.
Readjust lines and change over equipment for product, material, size, and pack pattern.
Run first piece of production and check for conformance to quality standards.
Perform preventive maintenance checks and take appropriate corrective action.
Record production delays and maintain required downtime records.
Advise Group Leader and Production Maintenance Manager of recurring equipment malfunctions.
Clean and sanitize equipment and necessary parts as required.
Monitor equipment for unsafe conditions and recommend or implement corrective actions.
Provide own hand tools for repair of production equipment.
Analyze, diagnose, and resolve mechanical and operational problems, taking corrective action.
Maintain mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic functions of production equipment.
Replace parts such as bearings, sprockets, chains, belts, limit switches, air cylinders, and valves.
Perform major overhaul and repair work on all production equipment.
Maintain inventory of spare parts and prepare purchase requisitions for authorization.
Assist in training Production Workers and Mechanics in equipment operation and safety precautions.
Provide input on the development of specifications for new machinery.
Assist in setting up, utilizing, and evaluating the Plant Maintenance Program.
Utilize data from preventive maintenance and production records to identify root causes of production problems and recommend corrective actions.
Essential Skills
Proficiency in at least three of the following skills: welding, machine shop, industrial electricity, PLC, or pipe fitting.
Perform change-overs and repair of at least eight lines.
4+ years of industrial maintenance experience, preferably in plastics or packaging.
Ability to use hand tools such as hammer, screwdriver, and wrench.
Ability to read and interpret machinery and electrical blueprints/schematics and apply set-up and maintenance manual instructions.
Ability to convert units of measure.
Proficiency in extensive troubleshooting of packaging equipment.
Ability to use precision measuring devices.
Capability to stick weld stainless and mild steel in all positions.
Ability to TIG and/or MIG weld stainless and carbon steel.
Ability to cut, weld, and braze with gas welding equipment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Strong electrical and mechanical skills in multiple areas.
Experience with PLC troubleshooting and industrial electrical systems.
Familiarity with preventive maintenance, mechanical, and pneumatic systems.
