Job Summary Perform journey‑level skilled service, maintenance, and repair work on automotive and related equipment.
Typical Classification Essential Duties
Perform skilled preventive maintenance, repairs, and adjustments on County Fleet vehicles, in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures under basic supervision.
Diagnose and repair components for electrical, electronic, fuel supply, hydraulics, and cooling systems.
Determine extent of necessary repairs and prioritize work tasks.
Transport equipment from the field to the repair facility and perform emergency repairs in the field as required.
Review status of equipment and perform safety inspections, identify and report equipment problems requiring additional maintenance and repair, and notify supervisors of major repair problems.
Install and test auxiliary and specialized equipment.
Perform routine shop facility maintenance, clean work areas, pick up debris, dispose of lubricants and chemicals in accordance with FSD safety regulations and procedures.
Maintain work orders, records, and logs of services performed and general vehicle information, report any operational problems to the supervisor in a timely manner, and complete other reports as required.
Control work site to assure that safety rules and regulations are followed and recognize, avoid, and report safety hazards, equipment problems, repair needs, security issues, and emergency situations.
Maintain proficiency with fleet management & maintenance system software and other systems as required by the job.
Provide training to an assigned Mechanic Trainee to complete minor adjustments and repairs for required additional assistance.
Maintain absolute confidentiality of work‑related issues, customer records, and restricted County information.
Position Specific Duties - Heavy Duty Assignment
Inspect and diagnose mechanical and electrical problems on County heavy equipment and specialty vehicles, determine extent of necessary repairs, and prioritize work tasks.
Perform technical repairs and system overhauls on heavy equipment and specialty vehicle engines, transmissions, power trains, hydraulics, braking, and steering systems and use technical manuals and computer equipment to diagnose and correct operating problems and faults.
Perform arc and acetylene welding, fabricate and modify metal components, and perform body repairs.
May assist FSD Automobile Mechanics with repair projects as requested.
Perform other related duties as required.
Minimum Requirements To Perform Work
Any combination of training, education, and experience equivalent to a minimum of two years of experience in the automotive/equipment repair industry servicing light and/or heavy equipment.
Or one year of experience (light/heavy) with Pinal County as a Mechanic‑Trainee or an Equipment Service Technician.
Or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience may substitute for the minimum requirements.
Special Requirements
Valid Arizona State Commercial Driver’s License required within 6 months of hire (Heavy Duty Assignment).
Must have the appropriate tools needed to perform the assigned duties.
Preferred/Desirable Qualifications
Certification as a General Automotive Mechanic is desirable. The following ASE certifications are highly desirable: Suspension and Steering A‑4, Brakes A‑5, Electrical/Electronic Systems A‑6, and Engine Performance A‑8.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Knowledge of methods, tools, and equipment used in the repair of vehicles, equipment, and components.
Knowledge of gasoline & diesel engines, power trains, and hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, and electrical systems.
Knowledge of Federal, state, and FSD safety rules and regulations, occupational hazards, and safety precautions.
Knowledge of county geography, traffic patterns, streets, landmarks, and facility locations.
Knowledge of proper use and storage of hazardous chemicals used in the workplace.
Knowledge of environmentally responsible and resource‑efficient maintenance techniques.
Knowledge of Fleet Management Software Systems.
Skill in inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing mechanical problems in a wide variety of vehicles and equipment.
Skill in identifying maintenance needs and mechanical problems and taking corrective actions.
Skill in performing computerized diagnostic tests and fine calibrations on vehicle components and equipment.
Skill in welding, metal fabricating, and adapting parts and tools to specific repairs.
Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and specifications.
Ability to follow and maintain safety standards and identify safety problems.
Physical Demands The work requires exerting in excess of 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The work also requires the ability to balance, climb, crawl, crouch, finger, feel, grasp, handle, perform repetitive motion, kneel, lift, pull, push, hear, speak, stoop, stand, walk, operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment, and demonstrate mental and visual acuity.
