To assemble, install and repair piping, fixtures and equipment used in the distribution and drainage of water and water-carried wastes, air, gas, steam, heating water, and chilled water, under low or high pressure. Mission Statement

Install new, or inspect and repair piping systems including water mains, service lines, sewer lines, air and gas lines, valves, gauges, pumps and fixtures, including sinks, water heaters, toilets, urinals, and disposals. Install new, or inspect and repair steam, condensate, and water lines, equipment, radiators, traps, valves, pumps, gauges, controls, fittings and accessories. Install new Medical Gas piping including mains, branches, wall outlets and proper testing. Cut pipe and thread, using threading machine or other mechanical method, and bend pipe by hand or with pipe-bending machine. Assemble and install pipe and pipe fittings of brass, cast-iron, copper, lead, glass, plastic and other materials. Join piping by means of threaded, caulked, soldered, brazed, fused, pressed, cemented or welded joints. Cut or bore through walls, ceilings or partitions. Test piping systems for leaks using gauges. Secure pipes to structures with clamps, brackets and hangers. Unplug clogged drains, pipes and fixtures using a drain snake. Install and maintain boilers, and refrigeration and air-conditioning systems. Read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, sketches and job specifications. Install, repair and maintain fire protection systems. Prepare records and service reports of materials and time expended. Required Qualifications

Graduation from high school, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Current Journey Plumber’s license (maintained for the duration of employment in the classification) and backflow certification (maintained for the duration of employment in the classification). Considerable knowledge of the methods, equipment, and materials used in the installation and repair of domestic water, steam, heating, chilled water distribution systems and fixtures. Reasonable experience in the installation and repair of water distribution systems and fixtures. Considerable skill in the operation of plumbing and pipefitting tools, power equipment, and machinery. Ability to exercise tact and discretion in relationships with others. Reasonable knowledge of plumbing codes. Ability to read and interpret blueprints and specifications. Ability to perform the essential functions of the classification in various environments and spaces (high elevations, confined spaces, hot areas, underground, etc.). Working knowledge of underground water mains, drain pipes and associated valves, pits, separators, and structures. Working knowledge of steam, hydronic, chemical treatment, and other process piping systems. Ability to observe safety precautions in the operation of tools, power equipment, and machinery. Must be able to fulfill the requirements necessary to drive a University vehicle. Desired Qualifications

Current Master Plumber's license. 6010 Medical gas certification (maintained for the duration of employment in the classification). Fire Pump Test Certification. 4-6 years of fire suppression system experience. Knowledge of regulatory standards pertaining to NFPA 13, 16, 20, and 25. Knowledge of FM Standards on Loss Prevention. Functional knowledge of wet, dry, pre-action and deluge sprinkler systems. Knowledge of proper tool use, principles, methods, and techniques in fire sprinkler pipe fitting. Experience with CMMS and related computer skills. Strong communication and customer service skills with diverse audiences. Ability to work in a team environment and handle changing demands. Experience with fire suppression systems and healthcare settings. Ability to transport tools and travel to remote facilities; may involve driving a department vehicle. Must be able to move and position heavy equipment as part of daily duties. Licensure & Certification

Required : Current State of Michigan Journey Plumber's license (maintained for the duration of the classification employment); ASSE Backflow Certification. Desired : Current State of Michigan Master Plumber's license; 6010 Medical Gas Certification; Fire pump test certification. Work Schedule

Wednesday through Saturday 2:00 pm- 12:00 am Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually and are subject to change. Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the U-M Skilled Trades Union, Inc., which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment. Background Screening
