South Carolina Department of Transportation is hiring a Certified Inspector for construction and traffic control projects. Applicants will perform inspections, collect samples, record data, and monitor work zones under SCDOT, SCDHEC, and ACI standards.

Job Responsibilities As a certified inspector, you will maintain all required SCDOT/SCDHEC/ACI certifications in the following areas: SCDOT Asphalt Roadway Technician, SCDOT Earthwork, Drainage & Base Inspector, SCDOT Concrete Field Technician, ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician-Grade I, and SCDHEC Erosion Prevention & Sediment Control Inspector. You will document daily construction activities, accurately measure, calculate, and record quantities of contract pay items, and enter the information into AASHTOWare Project daily work reports for accurate contractor payment. You will collect samples and perform various field tests on construction materials to ensure compliance with applicable specifications. You will ensure that materials are sampled and tested at the required frequency and that manufacturer certifications are obtained prior to the installation or use of engineered construction materials, products, and devices. You will enter sampling data into AASHTOWare Project and Sample Log and track until results are received. You will prepare all necessary construction reports and maintain construction records until completion of each assigned project. You will monitor work zones on assigned projects as a certified Work Zone inspector to ensure traffic control devices are placed according to SCDOT and MUTCD standards and according to contract documents and plans. You will notify the contractor promptly of traffic control deficiencies and/or safety issues, and ensure deficiencies are corrected immediately. You will notify the Resident Construction Engineer of any areas of concern not addressed or corrected by the contractor. You will perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

A high school diploma and one (1) year of experience related to the area of employment; or an approved acceptable equivalence.

A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.

Physical Demands The physical demands for the essential functions involve frequent bending, kneeling, stooping and lifting up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May require occasional exposure to noise. May require working outside of normal work schedules and weekends.
