Job Description Join our dynamic team as a Substation Engineer, where your passion meets purpose. As a Substation Engineer, you will work within the substation department to complete projects that support utility customers with minimal direction. Collaborate with in‑house and client engineers and designers while providing training and guidance to lower‑level engineers.
Responsibilities
Develop project scopes, one‑line diagrams, and estimates for substation projects.
Review substation construction drawings, including electrical arrangements, plan and section views, grounding, cable, and conduit drawings, ensuring compliance with codes and standards.
Engineer and design lightning protection, grounding, and equipment replacement and repair for substations.
Make necessary changes and corrections to drawings and documentation.
Verify the proper use of equipment and materials according to project documentation standards and codes.
Ensure timely ordering and delivery of materials and equipment for substation construction.
Travel to project sites for walk‑downs and information gathering to scope and develop substations.
Function as a project lead for substation projects, coordinating work activities with internal and external teams.
Provide training and guidance to lower‑level employees.
Identify and initiate corrective actions when substation project objectives are not met.
Interpret codes and regulations and develop standards for construction projects.
Promote engineering professionalism and standards.
Develop, recommend, and implement plans by establishing goals, objectives, and requirements, including all scheduling and resource needs.
Occasionally visit project sites.
Essential Skills
Substation design and engineering expertise.
Electrical engineering and design proficiency.
Project engineering and management experience.
Knowledge of transmission and physical engineering.
Ability to interpret and apply codes and regulations.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Minimum of nine years of experience in utilities working with substations.
Experience completing engineering projects from start to finish.
Experience scoping, estimating, and ordering materials for substations.
Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering is advantageous and counts toward experience.
PE License is required.
Work Environment The work environment is a quiet engineering office where teamwork is highly encouraged. The dress code is business casual, fostering a professional and collaborative atmosphere.
Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Roanoke, VA.
Pay And Benefits The pay range for this position is $64.90 – $76.92/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment. Benefits are subject to change and may be subject to specific elections, plan, or program terms. If eligible, the benefits include:
