Job Title Region Design Engineer (SDDOT)

Job Summary Ready for a rewarding career that provides exciting and meaningful work? South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) has a perfect opportunity for you as a Region Design Engineer. The successful applicant will be a member of the Region Design squad within the Aberdeen Region Office. This position is involved in design layout and assembly of highway construction and maintenance plans, which includes roadway surfacing, pipe culverts, minor grading, guardrail, riprap, and other miscellaneous highway features.

Key Responsibilities

Design development through analyzing project scope and preparing design based on standards, field inspections, and engineering knowledge.

Design reviews of peers' project work and provide recommendations for corrective actions.

Technical assistance to provide support to construction staff and assist with contractor questions.

Perform field inspections and assist in construction quality control.

Coordinate with permitting agencies, consultants, contractors, and other SDDOT staff.

Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge

Highway design methods, processes, and sequences.

Standard terminology, techniques, and practices of drafting and graphical designs.

Engineering and scientific principles, practices, and methods applicable to highway design.

Skills

Access, operate, and maintain various software applications (Microsoft, MicroStation, InRoads, OpenRoads Designer, and ArcGIS).

Read and interpret highway construction plans, right-of-way plats, and regulatory documents.

Provide technical information and interpretation to permitting agencies, consultants, contractors, and other SDDOT staff.

Abilities

Work independently on several concurrent projects and participate in the entire design process.

Position Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related field. For entry level, a candidate graduating in the winter of 2025 with a bachelor’s degree will be considered.

1–3 years of progressive education, training, and experience equivalent to a Level 2 in the Engineering Career Family is preferred for the E-2.

Experience in highway construction or design with knowledge of roadway surface, pipe culvert, construction materials, and guardrail is helpful.

A valid driver’s license.

Compensation The hourly wage ranges from $32.06 to $38.99 per hour, depending on experience. The total annual compensation for entry level Region Design Engineer is approximately $89,431.
