Rotating morning and evening shifts

6:00 am - 2:30 pm

9:30 am - 6:00 pm

Job Description The perioperative clinical pharmacist oversees medication management in perioperative services at Duke University Hospital. Responsibilities include applying medication management policies, ensuring inventory control, optimizing drug use, and providing education and training to healthcare team members. The pharmacist serves as a resource to surgery, nursing, anesthesia, and ancillary teams and fosters positive collaborative relationships.

Duties and Responsibilities

Review and monitor patient medication therapy and orders for safety and efficacy.

Prepare, label, and dispense medications in compliance with regulations.

Maintain familiarity with drugs used in anesthesia, analgesia, hemodynamic control, and emergency management.

Ensure compliance with controlled substance distribution and control systems.

Provide drug information and education to caregivers, patients, and students.

Oversee all aspects of the medication process, collect data, and present reports.

Ensure patients have appropriately procured, prepared, stored, and maintained medications.

Supervise technical personnel assisting in preparation, maintenance, and dispensing of drugs and supplies.

Participate in orientation, training, and continuing education programs for clinical pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.

Collaborate with inter- and intra-departmental workgroups.

Serve as a mentor and preceptor for prospective students and residents.

Maintain current knowledge and critical thinking skills for managing drug shortages in the inpatient perioperative setting.

Communicate acute critical drug shortages to leaders.

Understand regulatory standards affecting the role of a clinical pharmacist in the perioperative pharmacy setting.

Implement and monitor quality assurance activities in the pharmacy area.

Support clinical research in perioperative services.

Solicit performance feedback to enhance work culture.

Consistently work on self-awareness and development to enhance services and maintain positive professional relationships.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Communicate clearly in oral and written form.

Extensive knowledge of drug products, medical therapeutics, pharmacokinetics, and disease states.

Work with information systems, automated and technical equipment.

Establish and maintain working relationships with various members of the health care team.

Minimum Qualifications Education

Doctor of Pharmacy Degree OR BS Pharmacy Degree

Experience

With a BS Pharmacy degree, two years of pharmacy practice experience or acceptable board certification, or completion of an accredited residency program and demonstrated ability to achieve positive patient outcomes in a similar environment is required.

With Doctor of Pharmacy degree, no experience is required.

Licenses, Certifications

Licensed Pharmacist or eligible to practice pharmacy in North Carolina
