Description

The Metallurgical Laboratory Technician performs material testing and analysis to support quality control, product development, and failure investigation activities. This role involves preparing samples, operating laboratory equipment, conducting tests, and documenting results in accordance with industry standards and internal procedures.

Key Responsibilities

Prepare metal and alloy samples for analysis using cutting, mounting, grinding, and polishing equipment.

Conduct metallographic examinations using optical and/or electron microscopes.

Perform hardness, tensile, impact, and other mechanical testing.

Operate and maintain lab instruments such as Rockwell hardness testers, spectrometers, and scanning electron microscopes (SEM).

Assist in failure analysis by identifying defects such as cracks, corrosion, inclusions, and other microstructural anomalies.

Record and analyze test data, prepare reports, and communicate findings to engineers and other departments.

Ensure lab procedures comply with safety standards and quality system requirements.

Calibrate equipment and maintain accurate logs of lab activities and equipment usage.

Support continuous improvement efforts and special projects as needed.

Requirements

High School Diploma.

1–3 years of experience in a metallurgical or materials testing laboratory (entry‑level considered with training).

Familiarity with metallurgical lab equipment and testing methods.

Strong attention to detail, record‑keeping, and organizational skills.

Ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications.

Knowledge of safety and quality systems in a laboratory environment.

Analytical thinker with strong math skills.

Preferred Skills (Not Required)

Associate’s degree or technical diploma in Metallurgy, Materials Science, or related field (Bachelor’s preferred).

Experience with SEM, EDS, or XRF analysis.

Understanding of heat treatment processes and phase diagrams.

Familiarity with Lean, Six Sigma, or other quality control methodologies.

Shift 2:00 pm – 10:00 pm (2pm‑10pm)
