In this dynamic role, you will supervise dockside sampling staff and collect and edit recreational and commercial salmon, halibut, lingcod, marine fish, and shellfish biological and catch data
With your experience, you will implement the region's fisheries sampling program and provide the information necessary to estimate fisheries catch and effort for both commercial and recreational fisheries management, assessment of biological information by stock, and subsequent achievement of spawning escapements and agreed-to catch allocations.
WHAT TO EXPECT Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, this position will:
Supervisory Duties
Functions as a supervisor completing the hiring, training, supervision, and evaluation of sampling staff.
Provides real time feedback to sampling staff about data quality and following protocols.
Responsible for directing and assigning work, adjusting schedules, approving timesheets, approving travel (TEMS), addressing personnel issues and consulting with management and HR when needed, and maintaining a safe work environment.
Makes equipment purchases for the Peninsula region and submits p-card logs and order payment forms in DocuSign before the 10th of each month.
Performs QA/QC for commercial and recreational data in the Peninsula region.
Electronically enters, edits, and reviews iForms sampling data.
Recreational and commercial fishery sampling duties
Interviews large numbers of recreational anglers at assigned boat launch facilities, marinas, and shore-based fishing locations.
Observes, counts, identifies, and records all salmon and marine fish species. Collects scales, CWT data, determines sex, and measures fork length for salmon and marine fish.
Participates and helps coordinate high effort recreational fisheries including mark-selective salmon, marine fish including halibut and shellfish fisheries.
Polls all anglers exiting a fishery at pre-selected sites.
Conducts and oversees the sampling of commercial salmon catch from both tribal and non-tribal fisheries in the Peninsula region.
Samples all Coho and Chinook salmon with electronic CWT detection devices (wand or tunnel detectors).
Recovers coded-wire tags (CWT) while monitoring recreational and commercial fisheries of multiple species of salmon.
Working Conditions Work setting: Work is conducted in the field and in the office. Field work is conducted in adverse weather and sea conditions, including long periods of sitting, squatting, walking, boating for conducting angler interviews, climbing in and out of boats, sampling salmon in a boat, carrying, kneeling, and heavy lifting (up to 40 lbs. unassisted). This position may involve working in or near water, including tasks that require navigating, negotiating, and performing duties related to water environments.
Schedule This position is non-scheduled; typically works 8-10 hours per day between 5:00 AM and 11:00 PM, 40 hours per week. Weekend and evening work required, occasionally including holidays.
Travel requirements In and around Puget Sound with seldom-overnight travel.
Customer Interactions Interactions with co-workers from WDFW and Tribes, commercial anglers, salmon buyers, fish processors, recreational anglers and shellfishers, the public during data collection; provides basic information regarding fisheries resources to the public, as well as agency programs and activities. Provides sport fishing regulatory information to the public. Includes occasional contact with individuals who are angry, distraught, or frustrated. Acts as liaison to Peninsula supervisor and enforcement on fishery violations observed in the field. Acts as liaison between tribal staff and WDFW staff.
QUALIFICATIONS Required Qualifications
Option 1: Graduation from high school or GED including one year of high school science, and four (4) years of experience as a Scientific Technician.
Option 2: Graduation from high school or GED, including one year of high school science, and four (4) years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a health or safety professional, biologist, chemist, or zoologist.
Please note: College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute year-for-year for experience, provided the course work includes at least six (6) semester or nine (9) quarter hours of natural or environmental science classes.
License: Valid driver’s license.
Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment Successful completion of agency training and/or certification for assigned watercraft dependent on supervisory direction, position need and training availability.
First Aid/CPR Certification must be completed within one year of hire and maintained (2-year certification).
Preferred Qualifications
Six months or more of lead or supervisory experience.
At least twelve months experience creel sampling recreational and commercial fisheries in Puget Sound or a similar area.
Identifying all salmon species and common Puget Sound marine fish and shellfish species.
Familiar with salmon life history and sport fishing regulations.
Knowledge of commercial and sport fishing methods and gear.
Proper fish handling technique.
Experience with Microsoft (MS) Windows programs including MS Word, MS Excel, and MS Outlook.
